IS PORTUGAL A HEADSTRONG COUNTRY?
SECRETS OF BACKSTAGE
DEDICATORY
To every Portuguese who say no to mediocrity, poverty andindifference
ANGUISH
Desperate for what is happening to Portugal, that I love more than my own, I have to scream my pain and my revolt. Cost what it may.I never changed this Country for another in spite of I had been offered an incalculable fortune by the banker and American capitalist Edwin Budge Mead, my children's godfather. Edwin intended to make me a will with all his fortune, but with the condition of living in the United States as a naturalized American. And all this why? Because I had helped his mother in Santiago do Cacém. She wanted me to go to the United States. In spite of the tempting offer, and his express coming here three years running to persuade me to change my opinion, I have never made it due to my love to Portugal, 1965,66,67, and it was said it was running a dictatorship, it was stronger than all wealth within my easy reach. For that very reason, and because the years run more than we want, I have to show my indignation for what is happening today in Portugal. It is barely for that cause that I unmask small secrets of this political small-mindedness we reached, after a military pronouncement that all received with open arms. The revelations I am going to do were not programmed for this moment, and maybe they never came to light, just as others which will turn forgotten or reserved in a month of Sundays. The situation in Portugal, at the moment, doesn't allow us to keep secrets. It is as if we reached the doomsday, where each one screams not only his sins, but his largest sufferings too, so that his country survives after having made its catharsis. I lost the respect for the men. I didn't lose my love to Portugal.
A HEADSTRONG COUNTRY OR UNABLE STATESMEN?
The rulers of this Country's serious crime, since it was democratized, it is to insist on maintaining this People in the more unrestrained ignorance. The criminals were always the ones that ungoverned before. For ages that is always the same. Everyone throws the blame on another. The Portuguese needs even no excuse. His intelligence, his labour capacity, his imagination and sensibility are enough for not having to excuse himself with what he will do. It is enough for him to work, concentrated in the task designed for him. From his qualities springs wealth and prosperity. Sharp tongue and intrigue are the Portuguese Achilles’ heel. If he becomes aware of the critics of that he is the protagonist, he hesitates at once. It is a mistake that must be corrected and against which all have to struggle. On that plague I already tried to catch fire when writing in the weekly publication the “Province", at the very beginnings of this distressed revolution of which we still didn't get to take off the initial brutalization..The sharp tongue in Portugal is the only institution that works. Never anybody tried to do at this Country no matter which that didn't lift right away a muddy wave of mordacity. Through that world of Christ, one lets govern who governs and to work who works. In Portugal that goal still was not gotten. Actually, when it is necessary, but only when it is necessary is used the critic intelligent, serious and frontal. In Portugal be that as it may the service to render or rendered, one insults, fawns upon, libels. It is the answer of the incompetence in a country where many don't want to work and many others don't know how to work. The Government will have two roads: the road of the past, via Salazar, forcing to clampdown, to shut the imbecile the mouth. The other solution is in at one ear and out of the other to whom doesn’t deserve any attention nor order. Be that as it may the strategy of the smear one must continue the road of the decisions, of the reconstruction, of the indispensable national revival to such a country where all want to be found of living. One lacks to let the others feel free, masters of their initiative, of their imagination, of their activity within their jobs, not disabling with small displeasures the men that can and should transform Portugal. This doesn’t mean that we cannot use the utmost severity before the pseudo democratic and the political cheaters that use the naïve freedom of the democracies in order to annihilating without pity nor mercy and for ever and ever. I give some examples. One of the most intelligent men of this Country is Dr. Almeida Santos, however he had the bad luck of hearing the rumor, the backbiter, the whispered offense. He didn't tolerate the infamy. He carried on his work, he made laws, drove the Republic Assembly, he was Mário Soares' largest support. I am sure that, without Almeida Santos, Soares scarcely would have gotten to take the boat to good port and conquered so much sympathy on the left and on the right. He, that is prone to have their lapses. Almeida Santos faded, he has not been Prime Minister, nor President of the Republic because the backbiter suffocated him. I lamented. I, that am a centrist, of all quadrants, should bet in this socialist. I remember Doctor António Arnaut that, desperate for all the impediments put to the public welfare and of which was on the verge of giving up before the resistances that were lifted up to him. I went to him and incited him to continue. He looked at me, astonished.- But, Cunha Simões your Party is against. What does it matter? The public welfare is good for the Portuguese. You cannot give up. I didn't do more than my duty. Doctor António Arnaut is genuine. It is somebody that loves his Country a lot and what he does is because he thinks to be the best for Portugal. Just now, on December 13, 2004, Dr. António Arnaut tries to be done a pact of political support that bestows stability to the health sector to hinder structural changes without an evaluation of the previous experiences. Let us see Doctor Paulo Portas (1) now. This one overwhelmed the critics and the backbiter. He turned a deaf ear, ignored afloating rumours, ignorance, political wickedness and, before the general fright, he presented work, he gave more value to the Country and got to confuse and to annihilate the opponents. How is it that, Paulo Portas, got to liberate of this speaking scum? He learned with the committed blunders, learned at journalism’s school, what is trustworthy and what is corrupt, and in the Government he decided to work instead of hearing the talkative colleagues.Santana (2), that is an intelligent man, is more insecure. He still didn't get to free of the ones that take advantage of his weaknesses in order to decrease and to ridicule him. I am persuaded that he will free of that fear, mainly of the accusation of walking through the "Stones" and of having his girlfriends. Happily that he has. Only a compensated man can work with having folded again energy. Sócrates (3), is also an intelligent man. He steps lighter. He studies more carefully his words, it is more susceptive to the critics and the backbiter. He needs a support to infuse trust. António Vitorino can be his Almeida Santos. Notícias Magazine's (4) director, on December 26, 2004, Isabel Stilwell, has no doubts on what lacks the men: "... the devoted wives... lend to their better halves a sixth sense, that misses to the men's utmost majority. The male elements formatted the brain for their own comfort, or better, in order their concerns will be as more slightly as possible. "As these three actors of the Portuguese political scene are included in his analysis, let us synthesize: the writer has carloads of reason and, for this Country to normalize. I’ll increase, politicians should have courage to distribute the positions fifty-fifty, as much in the ministries as for deputies. But... the women still hesitate in accepting government responsibilities, they hide and... the men lose the patience with the game of the cat and the mouse. In other words and paraphrasing the writer: the men are not to bore. The Portuguese is not interested whether he is governed for a man or woman, be of the right or of the left either or of the ends and even their peccadilloes don’t matter. Who doesn't have them? What he wants is to be well ruled, to know what he should do inside the legality. If he is not said he disembarrasses himself. He doesn't pay duties because he doesn't be very sure how to do it. The Portuguese doesn't know, and it is always harmed in his ignorance. He is the scapegoat as he calls himself. And it is so simple to teach him. There are two roads: The first, at school. Since the fifth year the youths should be taught to fill out prototypes of payment of taxes, two or three times a year. They didn’t spend, more than three hours. They should help their parents, less qualified, to fill out documents. The other way through television, with natural explanations, slow, simple, without affected and the Government's sign, for there not being an own rejection of this People that likes to be well commanded, but he doesn't like to feel commanded. One paid 10 cents per anuum to use lighter. Even a so tiny cost could not stamp my memory with the remembrance of somebody to have got it. Maybe in the great cities that happened, but in the villages the whole money was little. It was the time of the vegetable gardens, the poulterers and of the small services. It was the time of the subsistence economy. The slogan motivator was: "Work and save, orders Salazar (5)." All were aware of that difficult times and the little that existed had to arrive for the deprived. The solidarity was very big. The inflation was ignored. Who thought in getting a better life in Spain, immediately verified that the standard of living was much lower in the neighbouring country. The peseta (6), the equivalent to the escudo (7), a hundred cents, was 40 cents worth, equal today to 0,2 cents. Nobody starved because the State took charge, one way or another, of feeding the more deprived. In my village there was a barracks. The soldiers' ranch for everybody had to be picked up by everyone. But there was poor who asked for alms, of those that walked from one place to another, escaping the work, as today make the Rumanians. They pretend to be sick, lame, cross-eyed, full of quavering and to and fro they explore who work. They are the parasites of the new Europe that disembogue in Portugal because it is a Country of soft behaviour and helpful. We don't have for us, but we fed the laziness of the other ones because of this innate kindness that made us different from the other peoples of Europe that, democratically, run them outside of their borders. What seemed unimaginable, after the April 25, happens today, since, with Marcello Caetano, the beggars didn't exist. The number of unemployed was tiny. In 2004, we almost have seven percent. There are some families with serious alimentary lacks, both in Ave valley and in other areas of the Country. Alentejo continues the desertification, not because of the latifundiums, but because the people refuse there to live. For ages that we have been trying to modify the situation and still nobody arose with talent enough to solve a problem that I think of easy solution, but that the following regimes and Governments didn't get a resolution. In 1893 agricultural colonies are installed in Alentejo to avoid the depopulation. Salazar tried to transform Alentejo in the barn of Portugal. Everything falls through. The population emigrates because she doesn't want problems, what is comprehensible. To beg is a troublesome thing for the Portuguese and we can be confronted with attacks to the own life that would be disgraceful for all that steam in the same boat. Who doesn't work doesn't discount for the Social Security, that will quickly turn out , turning confronted with a larger number of retired than people on active service. The blame must be laid on the politician’s cowardliness, ignorance, or for supporting interest have been let degrading the Country’s economic situation. The shamelessness is huge because they know how to be managed with a badly informed People. What they say today, they unsay tomorrow just because they are not in the Government and they have to lie down those who took their place. And they make this, winning badly, when they win well it will be the total catastrophe. About what I have just said there is nothing better than to meditate about what Dr Francisco Sarsfield Cabral writes in the 22 th December 2004: “There is a lot of hypocrisy in the angry disapproval on the resource to extraordinary incomes in order to accomplish the PBI budgetary control of 3%. Many of those who criticize now such a resource are the same ones that, before, ridiculed the obsession for the deficit. Actually, without extraordinary incomes the real deficit would have to be smaller, notwithstanding they should need a much more budgetary control - when those critical claimed precisely a less restrictive politics... "For this small excerpt can be evaluated the politicians' big swindle fashion who don't have the least shame in tricking the people. They know that the people don't understand and they want him to continue to not understand. It was for that that they rushed on the explanatory insert that the Government put in the newspapers, on December 22, 2004, with the purpose of the people to reach in a clear, simple and objective way, what politicians do and how they accomplish their work.. But their opposition colleagues are against that. They prefer a Country of blind, deaf and obtuse men to a Country of wise, intelligent people who go though with their duties. Whether the people doesn't fulfill, the politicians always have an excuse. And the more they put up, the more the Country will fall decayed because totally empty of content. For Doctor António Lourenço dos Santos, the situation of the Country is serious and it won't hold up more two similar phases, with successive palliatives, not been solving whatever anyone tries, changing the socioeconomic situation for the worse, all put down to the administration incapacity. What can happens is that the own people, due to his frustration, disorientation and to the constant decrease of his purchasing power, force an attitude change in that the rulers have effective authority to impose the rules and so get to reach the proposed goals. It is unworthy that one continues to abuse of this People, of his weak culture, and of his simple faith for deceiving. I had to use a kind of mental homeopathy, I was compulsory for going down just to their fears, to their faiths, to their superstitions for trying to raise them. I took advantage of the superstition to infuse them strength through very simple books, but with something in that the People believe. On the idea of what they believe, I try demonstrate them that the force is within each one, that they are helpful people, that should study, that they have to bring up their children, that they have to refuse to be poor and that they can believe in the saints of their own, but, mainly, to believe them. It is indifferent the religion that they’ll profess. They have to solve their own difficulties, and I repeat this a lot of times: studying, learning, getting cultural background, working and refusing to be poor. I do apply even unpleasant expressions as: the poor are the excrements of God, the poor are slaves, they are the scum of the society. Then I’ll explain: the saints disincarnate, the spirits are not more than energies of what one can take advantage, but, for that to happen, it is necessary that each one believes in himself, that struggles and gesticulates until reaching what he intends. The spirit only helps if we’ll help ourselves. It is with this simplicity that I have been trying to help the People that I love as my own as if it was one of my children or grandchildren as I understood that a lot of them don't get to assimilate in another way. It is infamous that we have two million of poor. While the people will be not wholly and highly alphabetized and with superior degrees, which can be acquired either through television, Internet or altogether, the superstition and the insistence in that all must happen according to the slogan “God willing” will end nevermore. This people stops dead waiting always a miracle for everything, but the marvel will happen when one studies, has good knowledge and is self - willed in what concerns the hard work. Miracles are the produce of our energies, of our labor, of our study of our knowledge. Do you want better example of miracle than the one of that ten years old English girl, Tilly, who alerted for the arrival of the Tsunami, on December 26, 2004, and in this way has saved a hundred people? And where is the reason of such a miracle? She had been taught at school how a Tsunami is created. Life cannot continue to be a constant game of Russian roulette. If it the understanding will not be awakened and the reasoning, the fanaticism will continue to sow the superstition and to pursue the tiny learned in order to maintaining them tied and depressed. Only like this, the bigots will maintain over the surface of the water. It is a mistake that will also be paid very expensively. The science and the knowledge can explode everyday. The Internet, the television and the other support technologies force that the whole learning is made to exciting speeds and in a way accessible to all. I am forced to speak of me and of what I have been doing, not to reach whatever I want, or to diminish, according to the point of view of each one, but because we are sailing in deep water and we will never get out of a scrape, in which all we are, if we don't get to do away with the armchair quarterbacks where each one prints carelessly his opinion. One says a thing, another the opposite and the Government, for incredible that it could seem, hears all kinds of nonsense. Nobody is happy with the situation that we are standing facing for thirty years which is overmuch time for whom is, as we are, thrust in the human being who has his life at short term. The world saddens me, not for that I have had difficulties, but for those the others have got: For the hunger, for the embarrassed poverty, for the naïve superstitions, for the men's wild exploration of themselves, forgotten that at the very last they’ll turn powder and that nothing they’ll transmuted in mud, smelling nasty from their monstrous fetidness, true mirrors of what they did and sucked in this life. The Portuguese People is a people credulous, good and inexperienced, that it is to being thrown towards the abyss by unproved that waste their time in useless holy little controversies wars instead of dealing with the Country’s businesses in order to solve them. Why does the People doesn’t know further? Because he doesn't attend the school. And he doesn’t study, why? Because he has little time, once he works from the morning till night in order to earn his daily bread and as he doesn't know how to a fair return he gives thanks. The prayer is the only happiness that is a good bargain and shape him well to carry on living and serving. But where is the evil? To transmute praying in order to become an obsession unable of turning prayers in bread, money and well - being. The priests of the different churches have to understand they belong to the 21st century and it is their duty to teach to complement the prayers’ actions with work, study and knowledge. They have to help the Government to change the mentalities. It is a mistake to continue to insist that for the poor " the kingdom of heaven is at hand." It is an infamy. Even if the sky was pure reality instead of simple imagination, they would commit many sins as saying obscenities and carrying out anti – social acts that the ecclesiastical legislators should reprove according to the established canons, so that the paradise would be further, in the same way, because unreachable, a desert mirage! We are in the 21st century. Let us put down fantasy and lies. The kingdom of the skies is in this world. The religions, more than the institutions, to discover and impose new gods are vehicles to complement the people’s education. Hear Muhammad when he speaks of Fatima: “hygiene is a faith’s manifestation. " To the priests and not the politicians, as here they show themselves incapable of ruling, fit in the obligation of teaching these fundamental regulations for the human coexistence. The people have to be motivated to own the maximum income of their capacities and not to be ashamed of working, both the illiterates and those who have university degrees. We are all in the same boat and we have to overcome all these difficulties that we are still finding in 2005. One of the great obstacles of the Governments, in Portugal, is in knowing to manage to pass the message. When it is tried, the opposition obstructs the road. Who is in the opposition, obstructs. He uses whichever method to drop the Government and who pays is the People, perfectly knowing that all came out prejudiced. PCP (9) and BE (10) abuse of the throw down, what discredits them. It is not comprehensible that the Governments make everything wrong. The people is not as foolish as it is imputed to him and the results are reflected in the elections. As I am in tide of revelations it’s easy to me to say that I already voted on behalf of PCP, when I have declared in the middle of the Assembly that with PCP nor into the sky I should go, only for seeing if this politics of uncertainties and fantasies changed. Although I have been “petted” a lot of times, in the Parliament, with protests of Fascist. I have shown to myself that when voting in the PCP I respected the Party, although I had my doubts as for the result of the vote. What I have done, should make the Portuguese People; He should adjust or to shake the structures in order to show the Country his way to get order. Everyone in his turn should vote sometimes on behalf of one, sometimes on behalf of the other. We know that we are ten million, more or less. But nobody knows exactly. This is a Country of uncertainties and that operates on the spur of the moment, but supposing we are that ten millions, only fifteen percent lives reasonably. The others serve. It is a Country of services. Stretching out more the word: it is a obligingly country. That should be embarrassed. We are few and we should be all good ones. All should be highly specialized and live rich and happy. The happiness gives health. The Portuguese People is submissive, intelligent, sensitive, loving, when it is made much of him. When he feels stimulated, he is unexpected. The saint can change, in seconds, to the worst criminal, in the largest evildoer and he won't be sorry, as he feels he is right. When he understands that he has transgressed, humbles himself and turn shy of what he did. If he’ll can, he’ll repair the damage caused, even that he takes a lifetime. It is for that reason it is a misunderstanding and a waste to spend money in prisons. It is there his marginalality school. It is there that he wins hate to the society, when he understands that the punishment could be transformed in work in behalf of the community. The prison is his University, the one he never had. When he leaves, will collect the price and will wait as long as he needs to be paid of the injustice. But in this country, neck and neck with this friendly people, there is a class of individuals that feel above the sins of who wins little because he little knows. In this species are the Virgins of sins: they don't behave badly, they don't insult, they are good parents and mothers, they don't practice adultery, and they want all to obey them... finally, they are some refined, dissimulated ones and liars. With these gays all precaution is little. Is it not wiser to help to solve the problems of the others instead of increasing them? No. They think, that, in a similar way, they can get hold of benefits from a People that still has a million and a half of illiterates and eight million and a half that know how to read and write. Of this eight million and a half, seven million don't understand very well what they read. At last, there is almost five thousand, with universities degrees. For these reasons we live in a Country: Of suspicious people, Of small betrayals, Of small bitterness, Of mean envies, Of false prejudices, Of false puritan, Of inconsequent improvisers, Of imprudent by nature, Of irredeemable individualists, Of selfish ordinary, Of shameless hypocrites when they defend, fighting tooth and nail, the more underprivileged , and behind their back they suck them body and soul, arranging huge fortunes, never explained, and that they will never be capable to spend in life or of giving them any usefulness. Catch in a policy, of those who say that the politicians win little, and see the fortune that hide and the one it is within sight. The rulers have money for everything: for cars of high cylinder capacity and of very high price. They have luxurious offices. They pay enormous sums for studies that throw away. They waste money in immoral payments. The SCUTS case is an example hard to believe. The State pays 700 million every year and for fifteen years. According to people's out of the Government calculations the SCUTS would be paid, with high interests, in three years and the case would be finished, but no, they continue to be paid during more twelve years. Who is that who would remember to build ten soccer stadiums, when five would be more than enough? How much did hey cost? 800? 1000 million? They interrupted the construction of the dam, in Foz Côa, because the engravings didn't know how to swim, but nobody had courage enough of saying that they didn't drown. With this nonsense they locked the development of the area and they lied down for the garbage 500 million of euros. How is possible a Country to be Governed like that? These squandered charges, with thousands of purchases above the actual prices, has corroded the State and all citizens. After all, who is it that it is been to governing at the expense of all the Portuguese? As much the politicians from the left as the ones of the right and of the extreme cover one another, although they fight with fireworks. When I remember that after the April 25 (12), Dr. Ramiro Valadão was taken to court on account of offering a branch of flowers to a lady, bought with the State’s money, and that that bearing has reminded us that the money of the State is sacred and that it cannot be thrown of any way away. How the good intentions are disappearing. And at such a price! Where is the democracy? Where is the honesty? Where is the coherence? The State, with Government installed in Lisbon, spends and dissipates, only him, a half of what Portugal produces. I denounced this attitude in the Assembly of the Republic with the entitled intervention "The Drafts of Lisbon in the province", see: Interventions - Internet www. cunhasimoes. net . But everybody turns a deaf year. For that very reason I have left politics. There are companies where the State is actionist and where the salaries are a hundred times the national minimum salary, others a little less and others quite more. And I don't refer to the bonuses of the end of the year that reach astronomical sums. Of course these places are reserved to the left and to the right that, in turn, got the power and to the other Parties which for this reason hide these scams. I wonder at the Press doesn't catch these subjects and it doesn't take them as national purposes rendering them the deserved attention before the Country keels over. A Country that doesn't respect his citizens, his culture, doesn't develop his intelligence and it doesn't satisfy his aspirations for dilapidation of his patrimony and bad administration of the People and of the natural resources, cannot be a earnest country. In spite of if they lament over the salary they win, the truth is that the politicians struggle and fawn upon arduously to obtain so coveted places. Now that the Assembly of the Republic closed, December 2004 and it will only reopen in March 2005, with new Deputies, those who entered in the unemployment in a princely manner, compared with what they produce, while the workers of the Ave’s valley and of all Ave’s Valleys, through the country, when they are dismissed and they lose their jobs they wait some months to receive a miserable subsidy and they will spend Christmas, year end, Easter and everyday of the year drinking tears, pain and despair. Is that fair? How many political delegate (those who occupy the institutions protected by the State), Deputies, Ministers, Secretaries of State and alike are already retired after they have spent very few years in these places? How many? How old are they? That is so bad that still today everyone remembers when the PS (13) intended to sell the headquarters in Largo do Rato (14) because of the incomportables debts. They entered the Government and everything was solved instantly. Now that the President dissolved the Parliament, the Largo do Rato’s headquarters no longer serves them for the meetings, they prefer high luxury hotels where the stewardships are worthy of somebody who already banquets to the table of the budget. They began to spend on account. The other Parties, only an exception to the PCP (9), are not behind the PS. But this has special responsibilities because it claims itself of the workers and the social more underprivileged classes. They say this, but they don't give any hypothesis to the poor. They are crocodile tears and, just as says the song for the right, it applies also for the left: "they eat everything, they eat everything"... some crumbs remain with which they dazzle the blind men, the deaf and the rude ones in the assemblies. The politicians have to give the example. Salazar has imposed the people through his own austerity. Today the people doesn’t have, even, only one that serves him as example as regards to contention and of saving. Some amuse themselves on the snow, others are going to the beach, others to China. To stay in Portugal is forbidden. They use automobiles of high cylinder capacity in price and in horses. They have country , beach and city houses. They dress from the good and of the best. They eat in restaurants at prohibitive prices. A meal represents an unqualified worker's monthly wage. SOBS 7 In the age of Salazar there was also one or another that exceeded himself, not a lot, but it was enough to go beyond to start off immediate reflex. I had come from France, where I was employee in the Portuguese Consulate in Paris and I came to work in the tourism. Since it lacked people in the accounting I happened to be outstanding for there. I had as Director Dr. Iron Rodrigues and my head of department was Mr. Veloso. This about 1961. The General secretary was Dr. Moreira Baptista. In the beginning of the year of 1962, this one gathered all the staff to wish A Good New Year and disserted a long time about cutback: That each employee even in the pencils should save etc. and such. Since then, Dr. Moreira Baptista will have lunch, a lot of times, at Gambrinus. The bills of only one lunch was more than a half of a third official's salary. Result: the expenses didn't decrease and they even increased, without somebody has been punished for that. In that same year I changed for the tourism whose Director was Engineer Álvaro Roquette and my head of department Mr. Forjaz. I set off as a tourist guide with foreigners and I was very fond of what I was doing, as a matter of fact a lot of times. But, as the contests were approaching for a step ascent, I informed that I had to study for it so I should be substituted. They have guaranteed me that there was not problem because they should spoke to the examiners, what they actually did, but I was up in seventh or eighth place, what I considered an offence. Without saying anything, and with the death in the soul, immediately I wrote a letter to the General Secretary asking for my dismiss. In the letter, after presenting the reasons of the discharge request it ended as follows " I am very sorry to be leaving you in the middle of acephalous (the examiners) as the foregoing ones”. We were in the age of the ferocious dictatorship of which so many people turned to advantage what resulted in the pitiful state where we today met. The General Secretary’s secretary was the maestro Ivo Cruz, son, a very comprehensive man who came to me and said :
- My dear Cunha Simões, Dr. Moreira Baptista is calling you in. He is furious about your letter. Pay attention to what you are going to tell him, apologize to him for that and everything will settle. But I hit the foul ball and as I am Portuguese I had to insist as much again. I didn’t bend and I didn't answer the conductor Ivo Cruz and I followed him. Dr. Moreira Baptista when saw me said:
- I thought you had grown up, so I make no hand of your letter where you are very awkward. Take and tear it and I’ll forget what happened. But I know myself. When the offence was a big one, my rush of adrenaline should have the whiphand of the scene:
-Mr. General secretary, I am very sorry, indeed, but I maintain my resignation request. After several conciliation attempts I didn't accept none. Dr. Moreira Baptista told me next:- In view of your doggedness, I am forced to order your demission and you will never again be able to be a State’s employee.- Your Excellency will do what you will understand to do, but, whether you sign my demission instead of discharging me, you must know that the first thing that I will do after receiving you document is to go to buy two rockets cut them a little the canes, and I will go later past the National Assembly whereabouts I’ll throw them burning inside what will drive me into police custody , but, this way, I’ll be ready to explain the grounds of that. Of course I was discharged and nobody ordered to arrest me. I told the history to show that the weaknesses of the bosses give the subordinates occasion of speaking to them between equals, even in the period of the dictatorship. Therefore, now, with an open regime and permissive democracy, more reason to defend ourselves. The Example is fundamental for the people to respect and believe in their sovereignty Organs and in those who are standing for them. It is for that reason that each one spends what doesn't have, without care with the cost. The consumption will continues to shoot while the foreigners continue to entrust and the State to serve as bondsman. The degeneracy of the political -partisan class did that, as much Salazar as Marcello Caetano, feared the partisanship. SOBS 8If we want to compare the expenses between the time where we had an Empire and today, that we are some mendicants, without dignity and shameless always awaiting the European Union alms, we’ll verify that even in debt head over ears, and our politicians complaining of winning little, in spite of they work very little, in the age of the Empire, the Deputies were 120, there were seven ministers and three Secretaries of State. The Deputies won 30 euros and the ministers didn't arrive to the 50 euros. Today, with this country, that nobody takes seriously, the deputies are 230. In my time, 1976, 77, 78, they were 262. Result; only a third has some thing to do, the others are limited to punch the clock and get up and sit down in the moment of the voting. But it was such a bore having to stay in the Republic Assembly and have to work so little, in spite of the Assembly to work from Tuesday to Friday. In Parliamentary groups, are little the people that make some thing, even distributed in the commissions. Only the President and the secretary and more two or three of those commissions are enough. The others are indeed mere figurants. I had to invent work because otherwise I should turn crazy. Consequences: imposed interventions and entered discussions even when they didn’t concern me. Result, sometimes, shuffled the outline and they grew mad. Happily that in CDS (23), we were 42. I can affirm that in the whole educated and intelligent people. If I belonged to PCP (9), my luck would have been very different. In CDS, in spite of being teased, I got not to enter in the mad-house. I was getting down, but I was not dead yet. However, aware that I would not tolerate two years, working a twentieth of what I could bring forth, I wrote, in January 1978, to the School of Santa Maria dos Olivais in Tomar, informing that I would occupy my place of Teacher, soon, in the beginning of the classes. I didn't inform more anybody else. On that same year, Ramalho decided to dissolve the Assembly and were other formalities no longer necessary to leave that house. However, during the following months my activity continued to cause immense problems for varied reasons. It was the way to defend the People, that paid me, and of maintaining my intact mental sanity. I well had informed that it would go as independent. My Party is my Country, in spite of being a natural centrist, in other words, I defend the right, the left and the ends, according to their reasons to the good of Portugal. It is the Country that is my concern. Unhappily it is not a serious Country, more due to the professionalism lack of who governs and it legislaters than to the responsibility of the people that the only thing that asks is to be governed. The Portuguese People are, in the world, the most sensitive, the more friendly, the most intelligent and the more diligent, but all these qualities have been asleep, a lot of times by force and others for lack of prestigious bosses and experts of his psychology. In the last two hundred and fifty years only two men were imposed and were obeyed. One of them, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, Marquis of Pombal. The other, Professor Dr. António de Olivera Salazar. The former used the force in a very violent way , but he got to put again the Country neck and neck with the rest of Europe. A monumental statue was erected to him, sign that he was recognized for the merit of the work and of the intelligence. Salazar, authoritative and nothing sanguinary, governed betting in the prevention. The Country calmed and prospered. The accusations did him unfair and ingrate. He made mistakes, but he did work. To the accusation that during his consulate, forty years old, 41 people were killed by political reasons, I’ll answer that, last year, in the Portuguese prisons died 42 people. But we can compare with other countries and to verify that, even in the democratic countries, and in time of peace, the political deaths reached numbers, several times, very superiors. I don't speak in Stalin that only in one year ordered to kill three million people. But the politicians in order to reach the power use all methods: the valid ones and the demagogic ones. In Portugal are these that still today are prevailing. Who does lose? The Portuguese that are at the mercy of the capacity and of these manipulators of the word to deceive the more naïve.We attended like this, in the first years post revolution, to all class of opportunisms, threats, deaths through “democratic" brigades and revolutionaries. The Portuguese People are a people happy, wee willing, cheerful, even when he doesn't have whatever the politicians enjoy. The Portuguese People should not be underappreciated. It should be helped. After the entrance of the Inquisition in Portugal, of the disaster of Alcacer Kibir, of the claim, of the Spanish family, for the right to govern Portugal’s kingdom due to the stubborn boy's bigot foolishness. It was followed the incapacity of Fillips and the overseas plundering. The courage, of this People, was powdered. He understood he could not believe in anybody. Even so he accepted to support the plotters of 1640 and to give in the hands of somebody that had been born in the Portuguese fields. The effort was superhuman. When he/she began to lift the head the earthquake of 1755 came. It puts to the proof his determination and the will of living again, against the natural elements, in fury. He/she got to raise due to the iron hand of Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo. He believed in himself again. But the destiny continued to play him tricks. The French Revolution demanded a betrayal to the oldest Ally. The Portuguese are honourable people. They didn't accept the imposition and by order of Napoleon, the generals, their flunkies, invade the Country, they settle, they eat one’s fill, they kill and they steal shamelessly. Junot himself pillaged the Jerónimos Bible, rescued the widow, for ready money. The king flees to Brazil and there it would be forever those who here stayed knew to govern and they had command capacity. But those who govern insecure prefer the oppression yoke. They are not the sure of their value and force. They like to die accompanied. They demand that the king returns. With his descent the violence and the death of thousands of Portuguese, whose only crime was to be ignorant returns and for that rustic men.The force of us that had created, starting from the zero, a Country, in 1143, continues to degrade. The indifference for the public interests became general, his disenchantment changed in apathy, their faiths went back to the superstitions. They turned to believe that it was not worthwhile to have any cause to worry because of the poor it was the kingdom of the skies. They didn't enjoy here, they should enjoy there. The ignorance, instead of decreasing, it increased again.Desperate, for successive mistakes, they kill the kings, they who are docile and kind. It is the discouragement that makes to take them violent attitudes. The Portuguese only reacts like this when pursued, when he doesn't have another exit. The Sun, the climate, the Nature where lives molded him the character. He is clueless human being, smiling, serviceable. Only the rulers aren’t fit. They go proud when they enter for those positions. They feel airs. They become important and haughty people. They make the apprenticeship in the Government and they pass to administrators of companies. They continue to think be important people. But only the healthy, in the reality, if they serve the People. After the kings, the Portuguese, believed in the Presidents and in the Republic, but quickly they verified that the life improvement never again appeared.First they informed the rulers through strikes: 237 between 1910 and 1911, they tolerated monumental beatings. Afonso Costa, man of wide promises, of easy word, of the revolution and of the democracy, it tries to put them collect. It is accused of syndicalist’s split. Many paid with the life the daring of lifting the voice. As, by fair means, nobody gives them any credit, they enter the nonsense; they kill, in 1917, President Sidónio Pais. Even so they are not understood. The revolts are constant and the deaths to the thousands. 1921 they undo several politics. The victims are António Granjo, that had been a Prime Minister; Machado Santos, José Carlos da Maia e Vasconcelos, colonel Botelho. The people had lost patience with them, respect and sense of duty. The impoverishment and the brutalization of the Country were general. The situation, catastrophic. The people demand somebody to govern him. It mattered any more that the Government should be a Dictatorship, which he wanted was that somebody put term to the hunger, to the chaos; a lot of day lost their lives with the daily revolution. The People demanded somebody to govern and gave him peacefulness and assured the bread for the children. The lull returned finally. But there are always the unsatisfied ones. It was not that government that they ambitioned, they’ll prefer one where they should be part of or which could be influenced by them. But in the fights they didn't enter, they left that the more poor and the more ignoramuses served as meat for cannon and continued to kill each other. On May 28, 1926, General Gomes of Costa drops the Government presided by António Maria da Silva. The presidency is given to Mendesdes Cabeçadas, that governs in Dictatorship. On that year it is reconfirmed the censorship to the press. When Salazar enters the Government for the paste of the Finances, he confines himself to accept the rules and to warn. "All sacrifices are necessary. I know very well that I want and where I go." "The Country must study, complain, discuss, but he must obey when the moment of ordering will come."In this dreadful moment, in that we were, the Country insists on not studying, on not organizing itself in what concerns working. We learned how to claim, but nobody knows how to do it rationally. We complain for everything and for anything. To obey, few obey, because still nobody learned how to order. It is distressing to compare this people, that today govern us, with Salazar. Everybody will be angry with me. Go ahead. They can even order to lift the gibbet but I have to verify this most simple fact: Salazar rose, in few months, a country impoverished for wars and revolutions during sixteen years. Have we been living in peace, these last thirty years, and there is nobody to put the bills up-to–date How is it? After all Salazar was a genius and all Finance Ministers after April 25, didn't pass of mere accountants in spite of Salazar and Caetano have left them, full safes? What is wrong?Marcello Caetano continued the calculated progress; it was attended the social improvement with the attribution of pensions to the rural workers and the most modest professions. His honesty was not to call in question too. With Marcello Caetano there is an effective jump in the quality of life of the Portuguese. He loves and believes in the people that acclaims him and speaks to him naturally. The pictures of the time are elucidating. But everything tires, and, without believable preparation, An incidentally revolution whose goal was an effective salary claim, became a political revolution.Marcello Caetano knowing of the event doesn't lock it. He was disappointed and unable to change a country that didn't want to do it.Refugee in the Carmo Barracks, the today colonel Chartier Martins remembers, his attitude persists calm, in contrast with those who was surrounding him. It was felt that he knew what he wanted to do and in spite of the most disparate proposals to get out of that situation and one of them was to drive him through a corridor that would take him very far away from the crowd that began arriving: "The Prime minister doesn't walk for the roofs. I know what is my duty. I’ll give, naturally, the power the one who’ll receive it with dignity and who knows how to defend Portugal," answered him smiling naturally and at the same time nervous. Administrator Pinto served as middleman and the general Spínola received the inheritance of a Country with eight hundred filled history years.Marcello Caetano had hoped that the revolution would swallow the solution. Américo Thomás, doesn't forgive him this decision.Professor Marcello Caetano, in a letter who drove me in November 1978, and in response to another of my own, explaining the reasons why he had accepted to be Prime Minister and there to continue..., and that I reproduced in the book "Chronicles of the Province and Parliamentary Interventions", Internet: www.cunhasimoes.net; it is in "Interventions", says at a certain point:"... it was that which allowed me to endure five and a half years of regime and to do an effort to save what was possible, in the middle of the politicians' blindness, of the refusal of collaboration of the opponents or of the reticent ones, of the capitalists' selfishness, of the stupidity of the high bourgeoisie, of the irresponsible intellectuals' illusions, of the maneuver of the concerned Church in not losing some coming convoy and before the overseas’ problem that in the country the right refused to understand the only possible way and that the UN didn't let to solve the problem through the only way that would be acceptable for Portugal... "Professor Veríssimo Serrão, in an interesting interview granted to journalist Paula Oliveira, in the supplement of Friday of the Diário de Notícias DNA of December 17, 2004, evidences enough Marcello Caetano's unpolluted character. Beyond all the references that he points out to him, would be enough to say that, Veríssimo Serrão, one of the most probes Portuguese historians doesn't hesitate in declaring: “ I learned with Professor Marcello Caetano to be a human being and a fair one." This means everything. In order to get absolute certainty that the Man who the "revolutionaries" upset was a very intelligent Portuguese who loved deeply his Homeland and who tried everything to improve the conditions of their compatriots' life. The politicians who were arriving, in a hurry, from abroad promised freedom, bread and money for all. Therefore, on the heel of the first month, the most educated Portuguese, noticed that the things should not run well. He tolerated the arrival of hundreds of thousands of siblings that, headlong, had abandoned territories where most of them had been born. They had been told, in this way, the other ones, the colour siblings would feel more confident. Result: One attended the most shameful decolonization than ever happened in the world history. This has to be said. It is needless to hide it for more time. Everyone knows it and nobody wants to collect anything. The politicians failed completely, but the white Portuguese and many blacks returned safe and sound, while the decolonized killed one another without any reason or for the simple one that our politicians, badly prepared and precipitately, hadn’t enabled them to govern themselves. As unbecoming excuse, without sense and without need, they accused Salazar for whatever wrong they did. They washed their hands of everything wrong and used the ignorance of the people for deceiving, for tricking it. Please, read Professor Veríssimo Serrão's interview, behind mentioned. The April 25, 1974 was received naturally by 90 to 95 percent of the Portuguese population. Nobody was concerned with what had happened. Everything seemed natural and the life would continue, in its quietness, with the change of the regime. Last the first 48 hours everything changed. The lambs of the previous day turn bumpkins that debited all that was driving into their heads. The country changes, in two shakes of a dog’s tail, from a calm country, peaceful, in a field of dangerous rioters, that have seem their opportunity here of still to do less than they already did.If in Dictatorship, where nobody spoke, and few would know what it was, they already did only what pleased them, now in freedom in order to work it would have been necessary to drive mad. This way, this country travels from a country of conditioned liberty for some to anther where the relaxedness the unconsciousness and the libertinism won wings. To give some examples of the thousands that I could mention, we see the behaviour of this people, from the ground to the top, "that neither governs nor let the others govern,", more for the rulers' incapacity than for resistance of the ruled. Everybody proceeds like children, taking advantage of the amenities in order to do exclusively what they feel like.I happened, quite a lot before April 25 to have travelled through the whole Europe, as a student, asking for lift, as I felt much more limited and intimidated in France, Germany, England, or in Norway, etc, than in Portugal. There, with the rules, everybody went straight, while in Portugal each one did everything at his will:Through some pages I will stamp in my skin, the skin of all the Portuguese, in order to, I could myself also understand, if what each Portuguese does is under the destiny’s laws, or if we are the freest in the whole planet, those who would live in the kindest, richest of imagination and harmony Country of the Universe, but that will only grow wise perhaps over 2050, unless the administration of this Nation of amateurs and their budding work is given to learned women and men aware that to govern Portugal doesn't mean govern themselves, but hold the obligation of well ruling the Lusitanien Land. The Country reserves them the prize of the fame which is the main honour a human being may receive. Consequently, a lot of insecurity and suffering years will be saved.Few days after the revolution, it began the raving. If we were free, each one could do what he wanted. And so happened as a result. The police and the National Guard lost the whole force. They were bull’s eyes of the most loathsome violations. I, since my fourteen had stopped believing in their virtues for they have fined me wrongly, to me and four friends more. For that reason, in my second book, "Chat" www.cunhasimoes.net published in 1962, I didn't lose occasion of depreciating them. Then I forgot, but never again I looked at a police as a friend.I would live in Tomar where I used to be a Portuguese and French teacher at school. I was going to drink "my coffee" to Paraíso Café. When leaving, usually, I would chitchat and what I see? And the other people that there was present.Four boys, on the other side of the pavement, began spitting often upward three police officers that were going past them. The men haven’t even turn around. In the previous day a police had been disarmed, and the weapon, until today, has not been returned. I thought to myself: "I don't die of love for the police, but what is to happening will disembogue in the same chaos and in the same misfortune of the First Republic." I went home and I called mayor, Mr. Luís Bonnet. I didn't tell him, in that moment, what had witnessed, but I said :- Dear President, as I have been seeing some foreign tourists, in difficulties to understand the authorities, I intend to become trainer in English and French, during four months to the police. What does you find the idea? - Excellent. I thank you for the availability, but I have to speak with the commander’s constables because only he can accept or refuse your offer and calls him next. All through four months I taught English and French, but everyday, and in the middle of the lessons, I motivated them to accomplish her duty, to not fear the people, for they sought for order, peace, and quietness what put them beside the authorities.Since the first month of classes the harmony came back into the city because the police didn't spare gigging. On the other hand I didn't meddle with writing commentaries against the strikes. Not for the strikes in itself, but because the workers should receive from the unions, the days in that they strolled unproductive and crying against everybody and everything, even against those who had been since always honest people and carried on in behalf of them. As they were bosses... everybody would be stroke the same way. It is very poignant the ignorance. Some of those unhappy strikers ended up committing suicide because the factories closed. They were without job and without money. They didn't resist the shame. At school the pupils grew overexcited. Even the elementary school’s children noticed that, now, they also ordered. My youngest child, 7 years old, by nature quite and well-mannered, once when the teacher was preparing to punish him with a slap, the little boy caught her hand and commented: "No, not at all. Now I’m free." It was her teacher herself who told me the scene, otherwise I would not have believed. The students of the School, especially MRPP’s ones were funny, but impossible. They turned people’s life a hell both, in the school and out of it. One day, I was going downstairs from the second floor, after the end of a class, when five MRPPs were going upstairs in a rush, pushing everybody who was coming down. They shout me: "let us go past you, since a military posse is coming closer to arrest us. They had barely finished to spoken when I saw a sergeant laying hold of the machine gun followed by three soldier who jumped over the stairways in order to catch these cheeky political apprentice …One second later I see a sergeant wit a machine gun he was fisting and more three soldiers that jumped over the stairways prepared to pick those irreverent political apprentice. I stretched my arms from the handrail to the wall. . The Sergeant, whose face was pricked by the bladders, had a threatening air and, intentionally or not, due to the cholera, pressed lightly my belly with the weapon. Very serenely I, told him. “Only after killing me you will free your way.” This is a school. The man came back to the reality. He stuttered some monosyllables, turned his back and left. Since then, every young began to look at me as somebody to trust, in spite of my relationship with them being of firmness. While Pocinho, Mourão; Margarido, and others I don't remember, made assemblies in the groups, whenever it pleased them, when they arrived to mine I never gave them authorization. They said a joke, but didn't insist. It was waste of time. The following year we moved to some new pavilions, in the School of Santa Maria do Olival. I also started to teach Journalism. One of my pupils, José Gomes Ferreira, is today a well happened director of SIC. I call the journalism to the tackle to show as the surprise, per times is disastrous. The schools directions pointed out that history’s and Portuguese teacher’s must teach journalism classes. They began and only the following month we had a small seminar with Dr. Adriano Rodrigues. Among the dozens of teachers that stood there, I remember two history friends that said, without false pretence, that they had never read a newspaper, that they should turn bored if they should think to read one, and notwithstanding they must give the classes. This is the country where we lived. It is the country of the impromptu , of the reckless, of the take it easy, of the specialization lack and further they wonder that the youths continue the same indifference. That year I was part of the direction of the School of Santa Maria do Olival and I asked to get hold of all the subjects with the students. I guessed that in the Country was the only school where the walls were not stained with the slogans. I was careful warning in the beginning of the year. They respected. The Portuguese are not governed nor they let to govern themselves because there is not who governs them. This democracy doesn't have frame. Nobody stands imposing himself for fear the democratic freedom that, they understand, forbids to offend the lads and the grown and to force to work the idlers.Soon after to the Revolution I was invited by the PS, PPD and CDS to take part in the lists of Deputies for the Constituent Assembly. No matter how much they insisted I didn't accept. The answer was always the same. I don't know anything about politics, I am not against anybody, the only ones that interest me are those who don't know how to defend themselves. No I don’t accept. And I didn't accept in spite of the perseverance that they put in that will. I should say that I was then Director of the “Templário" and I would write openly about what I considered to be wrong. Later when we got close to the Legislative, on April 25, 1976, the CDS sent a heavy weight, Dr. Manuel Santos Machado, that in the last day and about three a. m. got that I accepted, as independent, to do part of the lists of the CDS and , on the other hand, for that it would be impossible to be chosen. For the Constituent the CDS had not pointed out any Deputy by Santarém. Besides Dr. Manuel Machado, the heart-felt Dr. Manuel da Silva Guimarães, my acquaintance and friend, since we were mates at Guard's School, another one that insisted over head and ears so far as necessary to accept to be a Deputy what I did as independent, but the CDS incorporated me in the lists as if I didn't. Serious mistake. I know myself. I am Portuguese. The People is only one. Any Party that benefits the people is worth of my vote. It was dramatic, as we will see further.Notwithstanding I was number two in the lists barely some possibilities of being chosen, after my “yes” I found myself thinking: “You did accept. Now you must let somebody see you are skilful enough to win.” It was a difficult bet. And there was the point. It was enticing. The Portuguese is like this: he likes the difficulty, likes the challenge, he is inventive, bold, but dislikes the indecision. This one turns him away from everything. For two days I meditated how I should do the campaign and I decided to be self-sufficient, either in strategy, and in campaign. I bought a machine of Stencil and I printed my propaganda there according to my conception and mentality of the Ribatejo’s people. I joined the propaganda of the Party to mine. One saw that someone was not integrated in the thought of the inhabitants of Ribatejo and for this very reason. I collected it , accepted it and for not lose my time with discussions, I put it in the garbage. When the MRPP knew I had a machine to print, the propaganda asked me to authorize them reproducing some papers. The UDP followed its footsteps and before the amazement of those who knew about this cohabitation, we carried on bringing each one grip to his mill but without never enter any conflict and without revealing how to capture voters. Deputy Acácio Barreiros with whom I, sometimes permuted some virulent pyropes into the hemicycle, but with who, out of that troublesome place, held excellent relationship, in Alhandra, took courage and asked me:16 Cunha Simões, is that true that a fraction of the UDP’s propaganda is printed in your house?”When I agreed, his eyes shone more intensely . He should have thought that the love among all of us is our strength. Our disagreements are only stretched by doggedness and unawareness. When biding farewell, the way as he did it, make me sure I had definitely conquered a friend more who, unhappily left us very earlyIn spite of my propaganda area, has been limited by the Municipal President Dr. Baeta Neves, I saw in my dreams that I only could win if I should work all over the Ribatejo. And so did I.his. One day Dr. Baeta met me in Couço doing my campaign, and, with displeased air, told me: " Cunha Simões, this is not your area. You cannot stand here", to what I answered with a question: but don't this people's votes count to be chosen? “Yes." Then the area is also fundamental for me. I don't care of working for the election of all the Deputies of CD. He was not very satisfied, but he didn't tell me anything else any more.As the campaign was considered of high risk, because they said that the communists were violent gays, when I got out to distribute the propaganda printed and to chat a minute or two, here and there, I usually went alone, but today I can say it, I always took a revolver with me. I never wanted to kill anybody, but I felt safer. I stopped the car in the towns and villages, talked, discussed, but "the people were calm. It was only presumption", as admiral Pinheiro de Azevedo said. Never whoever dared to strike me. They were sometimes hard in words, but I, even alone, answered them tit for tat and got the next. One day, it was the campaign giving out, I am coming from Ferreira do Zêzere and as I had still kept some papers for the return, I was throwing them on the edge of the highway. As the papers were falling I cared for seeing if some car was coming behind me and if any paper should fly against the windscreen for not cover the view to the driver. At a certain point I saw that a Peugeot 504, with two individuals, was following me. No matter however I slacked speed they didn’t overtook me. I thought: “this time you are not going to escape”. You will have nuisances. I touched the revolver, loosened the button of the holster. I slowed down a little more. They did the same. When I saw an open space, out of the highway, I stopped. The subjects stopped about twenty meters of me. I pulled the glass upward, left it among 7 to 10 centimetres opened, locked the door, I put some papers on the top of the apron of the car, removed the revolver, pulled the "cock” back and I got ready for the worst. From within of the car got out an about forty year-old man, strong, and with nearly a meter and sixty five, a meter and seventy tall. He walked with uncertain steps. I saw that it moved forward very nervous. I didn't make a mistake. He arrived by me and said with effort:- Can you give me one of those papers that you have coming spreading by the houses?- Yes. And I gave him a paper so that the emblem of CD was in the back. The Man was of few letters, but the blood of the fury should also disturb him so that he should not understand very well what there was to read. I waited some good six minutes so that he read a page that, at most one normally reads in a maximum of one or two. Even so he didn’t understand anything except when he returned the page and saw the CDS’s ensign. There he cleared up, a little his look and said with enraged voice:- If you were a communist, I should kill you. While saying that, he notices that I have a pointed revolver to his head. And I told him:- You didn't kill anything. To the minimum gesture you were shot died. Let the communists, the socialists, PPD, UDP, MRPP and all those that want publish their ideas to go ahead. As you are seeing, you should suffer the consequences of your hate. And the revolver continued pointed towards the man. But he, calmer, in spite of aimed, answered me:- But my friend would kill you next. And he called the other:- João, show what we have there. Show only. The other showed a repetition hunting-gun. I told him: one more mistake and one death more. After having shot you, I waited your friend spent all the cartridges, as I was covered by the car. I think he would not get the better of and he would take to his heels, otherwise he would end stretched and shot died. The Portuguese are like this, they kill and they die for what they believe. The death doesn't have any meaning.I got to be a Deputy and there I will find what I didn't want to know. This country, both doesn’t govern itself, and doesn’t let it be governed because there isn’t who knows to govern it; however we are nice people, laborious, serviceable and intelligent. The politicians have to know to take advantage of the qualities of the people, as claims Dr. João Alfredo Donas de Sá Pessoa.Of the some ten million Portuguese, two million are died weight. They survive with a lot of difficulty. Six million and five hundred thousand live so so, and the remaining million and five hundred thousand eats, drinks, talks, walks, take care of the companies. Others are Deputies and others are part of the Government. The remaining, the President, should be up a tree in order to maintain the exemption or to keep up appearances..Luís Delgado, in the Diary of News of December 13, 2004, is devastating: "... of the presidential speech, and of his empty argument, it begins to be born, with conviction, the idea that Belém, the PR and their assistants, were never determined that the Government lasted a long time. Never, in any circumstance, and in that "game" there was not transparency, nor truth, nor institutional greatness. This certainty is as simple as the arguments used by the PR: in four months nothing is evaluated, nor anybody, in conscience and with common sense. Be that a Government, a company, a project or a new work."The following day and in the same Diário de Notícias, António Ribeiro Ferreira is clear: " The Government had what deserved. The Parliament, that truly approved a National budget in humiliating conditions, against Mota Amaral's will, too. It lacks the Presidency. The speech of dismissal of Santana Lopes, uttered by Jorge Sampaio, could and it should be repeated, word for word, in the President resignation.”" Pedro Vassalo, in the "Tal e Qual" of December 17, 2004 is categorical: What one avoids discussing is that the President took an unprecedented attitude, and too serious, in a democratic system, when not having identified an only reason to dismiss a Government vested four months before... to finish he ends... Coming about, did Dr. Sampaio want to bury the hatchet with the PS? Maybe. But probably it please him ".Joaquim Vieira, in the magazine "Grande Reportagem" of December 18, 2004, adds: "Jorge Sampaio dissolved the Assembly of the Republic not for constitutional option, but to solve a problem of his personal conscience... Further he finishes off... his speech of justification of the dissolution doesn't justify anything in constitutional terms."The always pondered José António Saraiva, in the "Expresso" of December 18, 2004, doesn’t let saying: "The heedless way as the President drove the dissolution of Parliament almost gave reason to his opponents".António Pinto Leite, in the same newspaper and in the same day it is more virulent: "... never a President degraded their relationships so much with the PSD as Jorge Sampaio. The dissolution of a stable majority and the negligent way as the procedure were executed constitute an offence." Further on he includes: "... it is the hardest injustice of somebody when his act is contradictory with his previous conduct. To the PS Government everything was allowed. The party that had driven Portugal to the abyss of the bankruptcy was invited to continue governing. It was the PS itself that didn't want to continue, never the President who hinder it.. There is an interpretation of the constitutional powers for some and other for others. There are two Constitutions in Portugal. The President can even act alike, what he is not allowed to is to convince he is independent and President, for equal, of all."Before this sad nightmare, the President, doesn't feell well. As a consequence, and through a woman of the People words, for whom the politics is the price of the income of the house, of the water, of the light, of the of the milk litre, of the meat, of the fish and of the bread, when the President felt bad, in Pinhal Novo, after having spoken so ardently, she exclaimed sadly : "oh, poor fellow, he is going off in a faint."SOBS 13To understand what ids going through today we have to understand the past. I will serve, whenever possible, of witness or author of the events. It was still debutant in the Assembly of the Republic, I was there for five days, when the President, Dr. Vasco of Gama Fernandes, calls me before the program begins.. And he tells me:- Dear mate - he treated all the Deputies for mates – you have hier a letter from Tomar’s court for go to judgment for press libel. - Some weeks before, and before the raging confusion, I had written, in the newspaper "Templário", an article telling some truths to the assumed individuals, that without knowing or knowledge, imposed all the foolishness at their will. The offended ones, that were military, have decided it was time I went straight.Me who never entered the military service, nor made an war.Dr. Vasco da Gama went ahead:- But don’t worry, my friend, you’ll never go to court.. Then, , when I’ll read the letter, and ask you if you have something to declare, your answer must be “no”. Then the Parliament must decide. You won't be judged. Don't forget. The answer is no.Dr. Vasco da Gama was a jewel in a thousand. I began to go down the stairways for the hemiciclo and, as I was going to my bench, I thought: but I have so much to say. As I didn't open the mouth while I was hearing the President, if I said what was thinking, it woudn't break any promise. It was what happened. When the trustworth President asked:- Mister Deputy Cunha Simões, do you have anything to say? - I rose and answered:- Yes, I do, Mr. President.Dr. Vasco da Gama entered the chair, his face changed several times of colour and he insisted on the same question again. Due to my unshaken decision, he sighed dismayed:- Please. Before the Assembly I said that before the April 25 I had writing whatever had pleased me, though they had cut articles, but they had never taken me to Court and one of the books, “Chat”, was a libel against what the wrong had happened in Portugal. Provoking I asked if after all the democracy was before or after the April 25. I told them yet the book had drained, but that I had never been in trouble, for that you deputy will be at your pleasure to vote for my departure to court. I could have spoken to them about book “The Revolt and the Man", but I didn't.What would delay some minutes, had to be voted for, and some of those gays, that only are there to fill the number, they have well voted “yes”, to go to court. But there I stayed for trouble of them and for beginning of the concerns in CD.As soon as I saw which was the game in the Parliament, I, who didn’t do anything and upseted tremendously with the idleness, began doing interventions, and to opposing myself to the votes, almost dayly, against foreign countries. We don't know to govern ourselves but we insist on governing the others. I opposed me, always on behalf of the Portuguese People that is who pays to the Deputies. The nostalgic and extraordinary intelligent Engineer Amaro da Costa suffered immensely. For solidarity he had to vote, but there was always a deaf one to destroy the unanimity. He asked me eagerly to not to do it and I asked him insistently that he avoided the votes. Until that he had to say in the Assembly that the CDS don't approve protest votes against foreign countries again.Actually we don't know how to govern us, nor we want to govern us. We prefer to govern the others. You are going to see that Durão Barroso will make a good Presidency in the European Union. And it is what all the Portuguese, of all the quadrants, less the imbecile ones, will want.As my interventions were, sometimes, a little unpleasant, whenever my Party was offended, I was put in two commissions, education and another where I performed outside, in consulates, embassies, Presidency, etc. It was a way of avoiding my troublesome rural vision, but also very urban of the difficulties of the Portuguese People.I remember that one day, deputy Veiga de Oliveira of the PCP made a violent intervention defending the Land reform and attacked the CDS. In the answer, even not being called for the matter, I was very unpleasant. I told him that he of Land reform should notice as much as me, that he should never have dug a square meter of earth. And as Land reform I should give himher a rope and a fig-tree. Of course I have exaggerated in the metaphor. Deputy Veiga de Oliveira was a pondered person and quite educated. Far away from me to want him some evil. Professor Freitas do Amaral turn displeased with me, and in the Parliamentary group he didn't resist to a big reprimand.- Cunha Simões, you should not behave like this. Our Party is a Christian Democrat one. Our acts and our words should serve as an example for all the other benches.I accepted the repair, the Professor was right, but I continued acting in the same way, even to protect the true politicians, those who cannot waste time to answer or to think in offences. As my time was over and above and I had to spend it on behalf of a good cause for not entering in stress. It is preferable to answer frontally, not in a violent way as the way I did, than keep bitterness or fears. The Country must move forwards. To make a pact with the mistake or with the insane shouting it is to postpone the problems, it is never again nobody to feel with courage to govern. The truth is that I always respected the others, but they also have to respecting me. I am an accomplished Portuguese, but I am from Beira, from the edge and I would answer word for word to whom will offend me, since he is in the same culture degree. If I appen to be provoked by an ignoramus... I will ignore him.In one of the President’s visits, Ramalho Eanes,. that is my acquaintance since school times in Castelo Branco, he told me, to me alone, after the audience:- I am very pleased. I already have Government. Your boss, from the names I presented him, he chose Nobre da Costa. The following day, before my stupefaction, Freitas do Amaral claim that we were going to vote against Nobre da Costa. I could inform Ramalho, but that is out of my character. What happened inside of the Party was sacred. This incident will provoke a strong irritation of Freitas do Amaral in what concerns me, and had unexpected consequences at short and long term. Let’s go to the facts. When I heard Freitas' decision, I didn't control myself and said at once: I’ll vote on behalf of Nobre da Costa.Freitas do Amaral didn't say anything, but in the moment of voting she remembered what I had asserted, stepped to my bench and told me in a more affirmative than interrogative tone:- Cunha Simões votes with us.- No, I don’t..He votes, he doesn't vote, deputies assembles around me because the professor insisted. If you are not going to vote you must get out from the hemicycle. No, I don't. The other mates asked me, for everything, to leave. I didn't resist to so much request. Cheerless and very unhappy I left. In that Assembly, I had voted alone several times against the opinion of all the benches. The most serious was to happen in the following steps.Waiting for me is Dr. Anselmo Borges, who is going with me to Tomar. When he was told I was leaving appears the Party’s secretary Mrs. Mina, telling me for not abandoning the Assembly as it was going to happen an important meeting and they needed I am present. The Deputies leave the hemicycle. Everything comes quiet and crestfallen. I say Dr. Anselmo Borges that my delay must not exceed some five minutes. It was only to enter for a door get out through the other as soon as the session began. When I entered, the silence, contrarily to the usual, was peace of the grave. I thought to myself: “they have repented of having voted against the honest Man." I leaned myself to the door on the opposite side. What happens later is almost tragic. I don't tell it now for being very extensive and very much unpleasant.Summary: Freitas of Amaral proposes to make a disciplinary proceeding to run with the undesirable that was going to vote against his own Party, that doesn't obey his orientations, that... that... that... He make a lot of charges and he was right.. Only the first was not valid. For me it was the most important. I defended myself with all my neurones wide awake. Over five o’clock in the morning Professor Freitas do Amaral was defeated for the first time in a voting with the arm up in the air, what was contrary to whatever there was had been done. He left the room very angrily. For a lot of months he did enter the Parliament. I was down in the damps. The victim of the lost of time, was philosopher Anselmo Borges, to who I gave five minutes of delay , and he must wait more than six hours. Already into the car and owing to my silence and to my grief for having defeated, I am persuaded that because of the sleep and of some violent truths, a man of fabulous and very intelligent memory, as is Professor Freitas do Amaral, I must recognize, my trip companion didn't resist to the curiosity.-You have told me that I would barely wait five minutes... that turned six hours. Was there some thing serious? My answers were negative and dry. A lump in the throat, didn't let my sorrow go away. In that moment more for the Teacher than for me. He has very more value than I and, if his knowledge should be applied correctly to the service of this Country all the world would profit. Nevertheless, Professor Freitas do Amaral doesn't apply the tactics of the great generals. He doesn't speak to his soldiers nor he knows how to hear them. In this case the foot-soldier. He hears only those that he thinks be at his level. But those don't know the problems of the peasants, of the people too. This hiatus has been him lethal. It is true that he will hear a lot of thing without interest, but... in the end he will understand where the difficulties of the people are how they have to be resolved after his intelligence have transformed it and put into action without never to give up into demagogies or facilitiesHowever, Dr. Anselmo Borges didn’t want to see my pain. He insisted and insisted further. Already very close to the end of the trip I told him:- Exceptionally I ‘ll tell you what has happened there as you have heard, truncated conversations outside.Sometimes the discussions were exalted and mine very very exalted.- I will tell you what happened, but in seal of confession.Dr. Anselmo Borges is a priest. He still make a fuss. "That it was not necessary, he promised", but I wouldn’t abdicate of my secret if not in confession. After having asserted. I told him. There he didn't resist said to me:- If tomorrow the newspapers knew what you have told me, you will were the most celebrated man in this Country. I should say all this to Nuno Rocha, - that was Director of the Tempo, and one of the most read newspapers in the Country - and it would be a bomb.I was not able to glance Dr. Anselmo Borges straight on, he was driving, I only answered him:- If you‘ll let somebody know, what I’ ve just told you, sure you know I won't avoid the scandal. You submit that I make use of methods that I never did, but that I know I am able to do in order to defend a position that is not pleasant for the Professor. I’m not seeking protagonism nor I want it. I know what I’m worth and I know as I should behave.During years, nor to my wife I transmitted what had happened. The following days my smile disappeared. What crop up me didn't do me happier even whether my feelings towards the Professor Freitas do Amaral had turned into anger, but theirs had did and that would be lethal to him. This way I was no longer sorry. I had pity. An intelligent man and that wants to be President of all the Portuguese must know to accept the defeats and the victories as struggles of ideas in that the most applicable is that which wins. On the other hand, an opponent, no matter how weak it seems, never should be minimized. The injustice only wins because it doesn't have who combats it tightly. The Portuguese is, by nature, a faults transmitter. If Professor Freitas do Amaral has drawn me a disciplinary proceeding and I have been driven out of the CDS under undisciplined behaviour and for voting against my own Party, I would have accepted with full naturalness. He was the President of the Party. He was quite entitled to achieve to compel fulfilling the rules. He made it in the wrong moment. In the middle was a man, the Engineer Nobre da Costa that I never knew personally, but I was sure he would govern with intelligence and honestly. I believed in him. The Professor, not only it hinders me of voting in that Man as it drags me for a disciplinary proceeding. Before speaking about the consequences of this infantile anger, I can’t see it another name, puerile or futile gives everything the same result. I have to tell other facts that show the fragility of a super intelligent men, however, insofar as they are bad strategists end up not reaching the purposes they had in mind. Before my disciplinary proceeding, the Professor had drawn another to the General Galvão de Melo.. I tried to defend him, but nobody gave me any importance and the voting for secret ballot counted only six or seven votes against. The General was expelled from the CDS. This should have several consequences. The General is a very intelligent Man, frontal and he is not vain, although it looks. Consequences: the whole electorate that admired him and believed that with such a man was safe, suddenly that electorate had disappeared, moved, stopped voting for, lost interest. The CDS should have thought about this in the following elections, but it didn’t..As I said, the General is a man of a straightforwardness and disarming sympathy. Few weeks after this events have happened we were in the hemicycle, some eight or nine, all standing and holding a yielding chat, waiting for the beginning of the work. the General attracting all attentions and very cheerful, when the nostalgic Nuno Abecassis arrived. Nuno stretched at once the hand to the General to begin the habitual greetings. Galvão de Melo changed his countenance and with a voice that echoed for the whole room he told him: I don't greet s. of a b. Nuno, without a word, turned his backs and went back to the Parliamentary Group room. All grew bothered.I would stand always beside the General for whom I had admiration and respect. He behave so because he was convinced that Nuno had been one of the causers of his exclusion. I am persuaded he was wrong. And I, with a lot of caution, said it to him. Notwithstanding I think not to have persuaded him. The cause could only have been Freitas that turn out to be offended due to an editorial where the General, when being questioned on the value of Freitas do Amaral had answered that he was a very intelligent man, but that still lacked him a lot to be ripe. It was more or less this. I am mentioning by memory. And it was true. And so much true that the Professor carried on committing mistakes, I repeat, of strategy, and with that he destroyed the bases of the CDS, removed its supports remaining only the heads: Adelino Amaro da Costa, Basílio Horta, Nuno Abecassis, Ribeiro e Castro, Anacoreta Correia, Macedo Pereira, Canaverde, Luís Barbosa, Rui Pena, João Porto, Adriano Vasco Rodrigues, Lucas Pires, Narana Coissoró. The other deputies, that composed the Parliamentary Group, were the catalysers of the bases. Then there was an enormous range of counsellors; economists, entrepreneurs, managers, of enormous value, that believed in this Party and gave it all their support in order to CDS have the possibility of balancing the Country and to make profitable, the maximum, everything that there was and what would come. To the Professor lacked the humility which, in this case, we call prudence. The second Constitutional Government is symptomatic. The Country wins pace. The people feel confident. Freitas do Amaral has the cream of the best enviable people, but, in the pay of it he demands more and more of Mário Soares, yielding this one in almost everything. but Freitas do Amaral wants further more. Vasco of Gama, in Cape Verde, told me that Freitas of Amaral had also demanded the Presidency of the Assembly of the Republic, I don't know if this was exactly true. Unhappily Dr. Vasco da Gama, no longer can confirm it.We discussed the exit of the CDS from the Government; Lucas Pires was one of the opponents to resign and with him were more eighteen. He, was the spokesperson of those that thought it was a serious mistake this release of the Government without a suitable reason; At a certain point, tired, it gave up on fighting, I entered the list and proved with several arguments that the Country had to lose with our attitude. I recall I demonstrated that the mistake was so far acute as we didn’t guard against our exit, with men of ours in the different government sectors, what was the same as going by boat to Azores and halfway we decided to abandon the boat; to release the whole begun work, and return swimming for the continent. None account convinced the steersman. The abyss attraction was bigger than the good sense. The Professor may be very intelligent, notwithstanding, if he doesn't have who ties up his shoestrings, he will stretch at full length. To relieve this facts sadness that still today hurts me because they are part of the serious moments that we are going to live, I add in a tasteful episode, with General Galvão de Melo, which is demonstrative of our capacities and as we took that as facts without any importance. The General, several times, I deem that for sympathy, praised my dissertations. One day he makes an enormous intervention, very well structured, with exemplificative details of what he intended support.I was dazzled and I didn't control.- What an impromptu and magnificent speech, General!Galvão de Melo looked at me with a very serious look and answered:- You can not imagine the time that took me to memorize this improvise. On the second turn of the elections for the Presidency of the Republic, I can’t remember who sent me the invitation for a dinner in the Entrepreneurs Club. It should have been Dr. José Ribeiro de Castro. Almost at the end of all speeches, when all sang of Dr. Freitas do Amaral victory, I got up in order to moderate the hasty victory. I disassembled some of the triumphant arguments and said that there was the liability of Dr. Mário Soares to win the elections. All shook their heads and the dinner was topped off in euphoria.I caught an arm to Dr. Proença de Carvalho, the mandatary of Freitas do Amaral and told him:- I know as the Professor will never lose.- How is it?- It has to be him to speak to me. Tell it him, please.. He will win the elections if he speaks with me.The days went past us And from Freitas, nothing.. Then it reaches my spirit the machiavellian part of it. "if Freitas continues with obstinacies, and, being so intelligent, he didn't accept democratically the voting of the disciplinary proceeding and still continues angry, then I have to tell Mário Soares how he can defeat him.On that moment came to my head, my friend's and deputy Reigoto words, some days after the disciplinary proceeding, that, joking, told me: " you are always up the creek, to the left and to the right. If one day Cunhal goes to President you’ll appear hung in a cork-oak in Alentejo and if it is Freitas you’ll never get out from jail.As I never spoke with Mário Soares, I saw where were moving Doctor Maria Barroso doing campaign and knew that with her was Engineer António Guterres, with whom also maintained a good relationship. I wrote a letter with questions and the way they should be done, as well as the contusing answers that should be thrown. Professor Freitas Freitas do Amaral doesn't resist to the violence of the words. He is an extremely delicate man. In that time, I knew him well that fragility and I had to take advantage of it in order to defeating him.Do you ask me if I am not ashamed with what I did? “No. by no means. What I am ashamed of is the disastrous way this Country is governed; of the two million poor and of the five million semi - illiterates that the politicians don’t get to alphabetize after thirty years of democracy. The Professor Freitas do Amaral must be a specialized politician. He is in evidence. He cannot commit mistakes. I hope he has learned. I simply showed that there was one more hole in the system. The Portuguese politicians cannot commit mistakes. They cannot be some facilities. They have to be the best, the most intelligent and must get to the bottom of the problems even that they have no eggs to do the omelettes. There were ministers, even in this last Government, that got to solve the problems of their Ministries and of the companies linked to them. They knew how to find the means. Are some ministers more intelligent than the others? I don't think so. However, some are more persevering. They don't conform with not solving the problems. Their imagination is infinite and they know how to use the intelligence. They are obstinate in disentangling the tasks that are entrusted them. They put the good of Portugal above their interests. Are they my friends? Do I know them? No. I only enter the politics as I mix myself with the people and revolt me his pains.I went to Penamacor and as Doctor Maria Barroso, that had been my companion in the Commission of Education, was always surrounded by people, I gave the letter to the engineer António Guterres in order to be given to Dr. Mário Soares, in spite of I recriminate him for his impulsive way of decolonization. As there was no longer anything more to do, as the people says: " it is no use crying over spilt milk", for my part I have forgiven Dr. Mário Soares that disorder. The result already everyone knows. In RTP, Dr. Mário Soares entangled Professor Freitas do Amaral. I was the bomber and I am not repent and I own up my crime.I am not sorry because Mário Soares has turn people. This people is very simple: don't give it anything, but care for him pleasingly and he will be already happy. With Freitas of Amaral I have my doubts. He only paid attention to those that he deemed their pairs. I am very sorry as he is a very intelligent man. I think that today he is different. The University of the Life always ends for imposing. Finally, all of us are equals since we want to use our coat of arms, our intelligence. And it is with it that the Portuguese have to win all challenges.Adelino had the same intellectual stature as the Professor did, but he was of superior edification. When it was drawn the picture that the CDS was going to vote against Noble of Costa, in the same moment I wrote the editorial in the weekly publication “The Province", "Amaro da Costa Noble versus Nobre da Costa" can be find in Interventions - Internet www.cunhasimoes.net. When arriving to the Parliamentary Group it was Adelino reading the article. On tiptoe I put myself in front of him. Adelino was getting ready to think about, but when he saw me in front of him, told me: " You are not right, in none of your words... "And step by step rebuts my ideas. In the end it increases. "And plus, the newspaper is very badly paginated... " Next give me a true journalism lesson. He had immediately forgotten the quarrel. For him, the most important was the diffusion of the knowledge and of the love among the human beings, for that reason, Adelino Amaro da Costa will last long forever in all our hearts. In CDS never nobody asked for secret about no matter what it should be, but in CDS I never remember of any escape of Information too, otherwise my confession to a priest and, although some could think that due to the friendship that linked me to the President that could had happen, it is not true. But once, Dr. Rui Pena had outlined a law on Local administration, and Ramalho Eanes rejected it. He was furious. He found that a foolishness, because the People needed the law as he needed the bread for its mouth. Enraged, he that is a quite man, good, honest and very intelligent, screamed me:- Go and tell your friend the foolishness he has committed!Of course he put in any details more where the discouragement and the indignation were printed. The real truth is that Ramalho, from me, never had, not even a relief while he was President. The Country is headstrong at several levels just because the politicians do not assume themselves, and they don't matter that the essential be processed in a different way because it is ingrained in this people, to be like this. But they have to change. Is it not an honour to serve the State? An honour to stand in the history of Portugal? To know to let spring much from the little and construct the happiness? It is. Then they have to use their intelligence, their imagination and mix with the honesty, they will see that the whole people will thank them and remember them through the agesWhen some years ago a great noise rose in the airs on account of the in-flight trips and of the use that of them made the Deputies, I could have gone in his defence telling a true story where I was the protagonist that demonstrates enough that the deputies simply took advantage of what was "normal" for those cases. Here is what happens with me. Fed up with aeroplane trips for everywhere, and having already undergone two aerial frights, I pointed out to Adelino and the Party’s Secretary that I didn’t want to be part of the diplomatic delegations where went deputies of all Parties, for that it was unnecessary to point out meAs I already has referred, whenever there was some possibility of they set free from me, they told me: If you don't matter you will represent your Party here and there. On that day, no longer I remember which the reason, I went to lunch to Tágide with the President of the Assembley of the Republic and some deputies of other Parties. At the end of the Lunch Dr. Vasco da Gama Fernandes' said: In a week I am going to my land.I knew that Dr. Vasco da Gama Fernandes had been born in Cabo Verde. I asked him “are you going to Cabo Verde?- Quite so. From your Parliamentary Group I remember that it is going Dr. Narana Coissoró.I was extraordinarily keyed up. I had written the "Chat", available in the Internet www.cunhasimoes.net and one of the characters was from there.I had never been to Cabo Verde, but I described a lot of details of the Island as in a camp of the Portuguese Youth where there were young from this archipelago, I happened to have been told delicious stories and I verified they were very intelligent, nice and always ready to help in all tasks. I should be about sixteen years old, but I never will forget both, them and their histories. When I wrote my second book, they appeared in my mind and the way of honouring that people was to seize a character and make him slide into the book. Therefore, almost instinctively I said:- It’s me who goes to Cabo Verde.Dr. Vasco of Gama pulled some thoughtful puffs of smoke, looked at me surprised. - No longer now, I already dispatched the whole process. Your Parliamentary Group already have everything arranged. All is decided, besides, you were the only Parliamentarian that refused Diplomatic passport. I still insisted with my Secretary to show you the advantages of getting it. She told me again that Mr. Deputy had refused it as you weren’t seeing any interest in it. It was exactly what she said. - In this moment, Mr. President, I ask you to accept my petition. - Before your insistence, for me I’ll revoque what I already did, but now you have the problem with your Parliamentary group. - Don’t mind. This is my business. When I arrived to the Parliamentary Group I called the very proficient secretary, Mrs. Mine, and I told her: - Mrs. Mine, there is a trip to Cabo Verde and I want to go. Please say to Mr. Narana Coissoró that I’m going instead of him. - Please, Mr. Deputy, don't ask me such a thing. And with Mr. Deputy Narana Coissoró!She had barely said these words, when Narana entered the room.- Narana, fortunately you appear. You were going to Cabo Verde… - All right! I’m going.- You went. Now it is me to be going instead of you. Narana, that I admire for his intelligence, for his humour and for his irreverence answered me literally “you are going … instead.” And turned me his back as he couldn’t stand it from me.I caught hold of one of his arms:
- Easy. Wait. Hear me.
-Release me. I have already told you where you should go. You must go boring another gay.- Well, then I haven’t another choice... When the session begins, I’ll ask for beginning to speak and I’ll demonstrate that there are deputies that exaggerate in their trips abroad.I put in some convincing arguments more.Narana looked at me doubtful. But, as he knew that I was capable of doing that and much more he turn around to me, furious:
- Go, go... later he put in some funny desires, that made me leaping for joy, and that have never ensued as Narana has a good bottom. His words, not always express his soul feelings. They are more bursts, as the people says. After the cessation of Narana, Mrs. Mina and the President were faultless and I had what needed to go, and more 1000 dollars for expenses. The days that I went by in Cabo Verde were fabulous. The people of Cabo Verde are fascinating, sympathetic, the women are beautiful, the men intelligent and the children do not insist on begging, but the difficulties, with which they are struggling, don't depress them, only because it is a people of noble soul. They show great dignity even suffering immense annoyances.Inside of me, I felt a very big anguish. All that I should buy them was already lacking for surviving. I bought some swimming trunks for 30 dollars.Eight days after homecoming to Portugal I drove myself to the treasury-house to return 970 dollars. The chief, I suppose his name was Santos Velho, conveyed me:- Mister Deputy, I’ll already speak with you. Go to the hemicycle that later I’ll handle with it.He didn't appear. On that day I forgot the matter. But the following week I was determined to give back the money at any price. I called again Mr. Santos Velho and I took the money and as I was giving it to him he insisted he would speak to me later, however, as I am very stubborn and when I decide that something must be done nobody will change my mind. Before my determination the efficient boss told me begging:- Please, Mr. Deputy, don't get me into trouble, it is the first time that a deputy wants to return money.- But this money is not mine. It is theirs, it is the people’s.As the man pleaded in such a way before my irreducibility, that I discouraged, returned cheesed off as I started noticing the meanders of the scheme. And whoever moves these moneys would let old routines keeping up. As, they aren’t under control system endures until somebody is coming to say as patrimony of all ought to be manage. The lack is not in the employees, it is in the system. After all I stayed further behind the conviction that this money wasn’t my property. When I got to Tomar, I called Manuela Cartaxo, an employee I had and told her to go to get the papers to Social security for a woman who lived in Gil Avô street, Maria Fitas, as she had mourned once over she didn't receive anything from the State because she had got into debt to the Social security. I paid her everything and her situation was resolved. As still was remaining a lot of money I carved up a share for the Nabantina Philharmonic Band and the left over went to the House of the Poor. I have to say this, not to reveal a good heart, supposedly almoner, nothing like that. I am as all the Portuguese. Sometimes niggard, others liberal accordingly the money that I have in my pocket. I let know all these episodes, that were reserved for some years ahead or after my death, to realize a way of understanding ourselves and get down to find a way to leave this dramatic situation in that we got to. I am already an old man, I don’t struggle for myself, but for the continuity of Portugal, that I love as much as I love my children and grandchildren and as I loved my parents. Please excuse me for having open my heartThe money was not mine. It was yours that are reading me, it belonged to all Portuguese. I simply try to rise reasons to explain why our Country is uncontrollable: in this case and alike, since each one is careless governing himself with the State’s patrimony, instead of taking into consideration that whatever belongs to the State is untouchable. Something that can only be made profit in behalf of the whole community. But this mentality is in such a way ingrained in the minds that later on the trials about swindles and airplane tickets crop up, that should have suffered of this same “take it easy”, and that sooner or later has to be disciplined.Who benefits of these budgets, doesn't usually have need of them. He wins enough. Nor thinks whoever may be harming. It is for this and other reasons that, in 2005, the bills of the Parliament will cross the twenty-one million euros. Is the State disproportionate? What are you waiting for?Begin with the Parliament.Remove 100 Deputies and rationalize the services. You will see that the Country grow lighter, the remaining Deputies will work better and nobody will make strikes or claims his workplace. This way they may save ten million. To govern with money everyone knows.Since the beginning of this revolution there were people like Silva Lopes, Vítor Constâncio or Rui Vilar that made great efforts to lock expenses and to accomplish economic viable programs. Notwithstanding it has been what all know. Others don't get tired of alerting for the breakdown that can happen.Dr. Peres Metelo, in DN of December 20, 2004, writes: “The public average expenditure, that is, all that the State spends which are neither responsibilities of public debt nor investment expenses, increased 6% between January and November of this year." Further on it continues. "... it is that the bill of the State growing to the double of the speed of the creation of the Country’s wealth."We know how to proceed, simply we don't take the trouble of concretizing measures that others contest. And we will go on so while the rulers continue unskilled. We have capable people to solve the situations, but we persist playing to the suicides.
When Cavaco Silva spoke in incompetent politicians, I deem that he was not referring to members of the Government. The pointed out ones would be the Deputies whose weight is unnecessary, where there are too much people and where the quality is quite weak. The Deputy enters and spin round. It is a dead weight that commits mistakes for unpreparedness . They look at the boss and they imitate him. They sometimes exceed themselves to try to draw attention. They do it in the incidental remarks. Notwithstanding, if they are given one or other work, they aren’t perfect. The most skilled never waste time for teaching them, to guide them, to explain to know to seek documents and to analyze the current subjects. There are many deputies. They are too many. The amount is privileged instead of the quality. It is an amateurs’ club and professionals are required. It was more or less this that Cavaco Silva would have meant, but as I have said, each one interpreted the shot to his way. This is one of the Portuguese's flaws, he speaks and doesn't explain, he doesn't have courage of going till the end, with fear of hurting defencelessness’s. It hurts much more because the uncertainty is worse than the straightforwardness. Each one makes his conjectures and nobody learns anything with what was said, on the contrary, the confusion sets up, when the moment is not the most fitting for doing it.Cavaco Silva might have thought: "they know for whom is the message." But as the whole Country heard the remark, ninety nine percent held pointing the finger at the wrong track. In 1978, after an intervention in the Parliament, a little stormy, and having been invited to get rid of what has just said, before my refusal, the then President Dr. Teófilo Carvalho dos Santos, unpolluted man, told me that, in face of my insistence, he was forced to close the Parliament. To what I reacted: "Close, Your Excellency, this house and you will be part of the history”. This Parliament never served, nor it serves the Portuguese People, only it spends his money... "of course he closed the Parliament for some minutes”.I don't speak about the corrupt ones. This is a world aside and a true cancer of the country. The State gets to pay for services of five hundred euros, five, six thousand. And there it is the reason why the State’s expenses are another bottomless hole. I have given the example about thousands, but there are payments of millions. For that very reason, as soon as the report of Camarate was known where an auditing of the General Exchequer’s Inspection to the activity of the Fund of Military Defence of the Overseas revealed that Portugal had sold weapons to Iran, Guatemala, Argentina and Indonesia and that in 1980, four days after the death of Engineer Adelino Amaro da Costa, were been sold weapons for Iran, and the existence of the "confidence trick" was pointed out through which would have been embezzled 40 million euros. The most scandalous rumours due to the discovery of this case and to the Government's precipitate fall soon appeared. Happily that the media didn’t fanned the flames. The resignation of Santana is inadmissible. Every nobody attacked him to try to shrink his charisma, obviously they preferred him misogynist. It was quite difficult with so much Monday morning quarterback backbiting him, to govern expertly. Santana, no matter how much he wanted to concentrate in the rulership, the noise was such, that he had, fatally, opening gaps. It is not fair to behave towards a Prime minister in such a way, whatever the Party he belongs to.The Country cannot continue to be governed under the backbiter's fire, the intrigue, the hypocrisy and of the verbal incontinence, unless all prefer a headstrong Country.Santana's mistake has been to have wasted too much time to answering to who does no more than practicing games of words. There, some candidates to the government’s power are skills , are eminent in driving out the others in other they sit down at table . That was his weakness, when answering inappropriately. Democracy is democracy, but the people, only wants to be governed. And he fast conceived a slogan, more or less as follows: "Democracy without pocking is a non existent thing." My friend Dr. José Patrício would say: the Country no longer supports more puppet-shows. This democracy seems an anarchy, that sometimes works and others not, because the man is still to thousands of years of the intelligence of the ants. The revolution that everyone had accepted better or worse, but unsuspecting when everything was shifting went sliding down in cheers, downs with, , threats, strikes, and a lot of irresponsibility. So much, that they ended by dilapidating the heavy inheritance that Salazar and Caetano had kept in the safes of the State. IMF threatens that either we cut our wisdom teeth or it didn’t endorse more foolishnesses. The EEC reached out its hand in 1985. Then it changed to European Union. With powerful background, Portugal would have all the possibilities to steps forward and put itself, neck and neck with the richest, the more prosperous and more civilized peoples in Europe. What did the politicians do? They wasted the patrimony in spite of they have received hundreds of millions of euros from the European Union. What they did is the minimum that any illiterate would be able to do. In addition, they carry on very happy with the feeling of having fulfilled their duty, satisfied of the work, deceiving the people, to whom they deal out some crumbs, to whom they don't teach and that begins to look them sideways. The storm is brewing over ours heads and, or I am backing the wrong horse or this will ends badly. Now we are without Government.Almost wehavwe to ask:We need Government for what?We need President for what?We need Parliament for what? How much do cost these institutions? Are they worthwhile? Why are we not only governed by General Directors who already exist? This began not to be a serious country.Somebody will come from abroad to govern us just as we sent from within, one of ours, to Govern the other ones. The President of the European Commission, José Manuel Durão Barroso, was born in our fields, he drank our milk, fed from our Sun and our people's healthy and pure happiness. He is a Portuguese. Are we different from him? Not at all.The Governments of the other countries of Europe chose him because he is the best. The Portuguese is a born ruler. In each Portuguese there is a president and it is for that that we are a People hardly governable. It is for that that our rulers fail. As the rulers don't govern, the Portuguese are not governed and they give warning signs. This moment we are bearing, it seems to me, to be the most evident sign that the transformation of the Country began.Let us see the metamorphoses of this new revolution, that arises from the basis and that forces the politicians, the entrepreneurs, the managers, the teachers, the merchants, the fishermen and the farmers to use twenty percent of their intelligence in order to understand that their survival is in the survival of a People that begins to be fed up with so much ineptitude, of so many facilities, of so much fear of somebody to govern rational and intelligently. Before the abominable situation in that we are: without money, without dignity and without Government, I appeal to your intelligence so that you show understanding towards the Government that will issue from this elections, be that as it may the choice, however don’t forgive them the luxuries, the sumptuous expenses, the ineptitude and the corruption. The sacrifices have to fit to all.Be from the Left, the Right, the Centre, of the Outside-left or the Outside-right, stay above any one of these labels. We must be uniteted. We are all Portuguese. When the politicians behave as statues, the citizens should take care of them own destiny and before the inoperativeness of these simulations, even if it is compulsory to sustain them, we have to keep the law and make them profitable, so that in this house all live comfortably until the rulers learn how to govern or definitively turn embarrassed for not doing it.The Portuguese qualities, their genes are the same ones of those that fashioned Portugal starting from the will and the intelligence.Just as the Universe that was created by a small point of pure energy, and that along more than three hundred and forty billions of years created, patient and meticulously stars, seas, lands, animals and plants, similarly Portugal issued from a thought, stood up, developed, uncovered countries until then hidden from the civilization and created new humanity's patrimonies. In Europe we are the Country with the oldest borders. Signal that we are capable people.Although the country be in Queer Street and all the world laugh and scorn at it, even from those that are not mentioned or didn’t look, are taken as the poor fellows or the imbecile from Europe, and the truth is that we are not. It is enough to recall that ahead and as President of the European Union we have Durão Barroso; that amongst the most outstanding surgeons of the world, the António Damásio, besides a Nobel Prize, Saramago, a Siza Vieira and one more four hundreds of others that sell outside, the intelligence, that here is not profited. Inside of the Country we also have several hundreds spread in the most differentiated sectorsI continue to assert that the Portuguese are very intelligent.Do you want known a list of who can may lift this Country? They are of different political quadrants. The Country is not only one? Don't we want all the same? The winner Party will ask the opponents the ingredient which is short. Haven’t they courage to call together thought and action? It’s all indifferent for both? Then you must avoid politics unless the elements of the same Party are at the most very good.In any way I leave before you a list for better explicit the idea:Abel Mateus, António Borges, António Dias Sequeira, António Lourenço dos Santos, António Mexia, António Vitorino, Assunção Esteves, Belmiro de Azevedo, Carlos Carvalhas, Carlos Melo Ribeiro, Conceição Oliveira, Eduardo Marçal Grilo, Ferreira de Oliveira, Guilherme de Oliveira Martins, Hermínio Marques Ferreira, Jaime Gama, Leonor Machado, Ludgero Marques, Maria João Rodrigues, Marques Mendes, Mota Amaral, Nobre Guedes, Nuno Morais Sarmento, Octávio Teixeira, Patinha Antão, Paulo Portas, Pedro Roseta, Rui Penha, Saldanha Sanches, Santana Lopes, Vital Moreira, Zita Seabra and so many many others that would serve the Country without holding out their hands to implore more salary and show, with their example, that the honesty, the work and the intelligence are within their honour coat of arms.I tell you three histories of men that wanted to serve the Country.Mr. António Champalimaud, one day asked me to go to his house at Lapa. I had never spoken to him face-to-face, nor I had anything linking me to this person. He was a very frontal man. He came direct to the subject. He wanted to be a President of the Republic and he had been pointed my name, I still today don't know who, as the most accomplished one to study him the possibilities and to manage so that the idea went on. He told me at once that a good profit would be part of, a great lot of money. I accepted the task and during almost two months I make contact with a huge amount of people, of the most varied social extracts. I didn't collect to a hypothetical candidacy more than 2% of favourable opinions. Some thought the moment was not auspicious, others that he was a Fascist, others that had earned the fortune at the cost of the workers yet and few agreed to believe that a man who had known how to win money, also knew how to distribute it and that he would his best to crown his life with the most excellent that he could give to the Country.I got back to Lapa and I presented the results. Even so he was not convinced and he told me:- But I have 15 million euros to invest in the campaign.I answered him “nor 1500 million would be enough. I know the people well”.On that time I had already written some thousands pages on this people. I know them. They are like me. When they insist there is nobody to change their mind or defeat them. António Champalimaud argued again and insisted. I answered him that was to play fast and loose with money. He began to turn cheesed off, the history is big, I ended for not accepting him a cent, in spite of his insistence in paying the presented work. We have never met again. I felt that he became offended with me. Not with the People. He demonstrated it when offering his Foundation, now driven by Doctor Leonor Beleza.Who contacted me also for the same effect it was the General Kaúlza de Arriaga. With that one the contacts were always telephonic. He called me home at night, but as I was President of the Tomarense Club, considered the well-to-do’s club and also President of the Nabantina Society, considered the needy’s club, I was present either on one side or in the other. To the General Kaúlza I told at once I didn't accept, not for consideration lack for a man that I considered extraordinary honest, but because I knew to foresee the result of the elections. I believe that he grew gloomy with my decision as I haven’t even accepted to meet him. It was not worthwhile. We were two to be deceived if he should compete. The people didn't want. Some media had exaggerated in these work men's appreciation, intelligent and lovers of their Homeland. The people were very susceptible of being influenced.Today already begins to know what it wants and to discern the wheat from the yolk. Today, the people sides further with the individuals that compose the parties than with the own Party they had initially selected.SOBS 16The third was the General Spínola, that I don't know what wanted, nor I concerned to know. Although I imagined. Who contacted me several times, as his spokesperson, was colonel Vasco Salema, my wife's uncle, a man of exemplary honesty and a soldier of honour, but I never meet him. I never got to forget that he had abandoned the direction of the boat and in that I carry on strong in my ethics. The captain either saves the boat or he sinks with it. To abandon it to his chance when a fuse was lighted, he has given occasion to transform a mess rising, for salary’s claim matter, into political pronouncement, when he did it accept to be godfather to the captains to give credibility to the act and later he does fly away? People alike, I don’t get to look straight at.Here you are in front of three different characters, but all with an idea of the Country that they would like to have without worrying both with majorities and minorities. At the present time all have to interest us, but cutting straight. Without some pain even we don’t get pleasure out of love itself. After having gone past us, the happiness is ahead of all and it doesn't only take advantage of her who exacerbates his claims or ignorance or for arrogance.Since nobody teaches how one can live in a different way in the most beautiful Country of the world, the one which has the best climate, the best beaches, the best wine, the best olive oil, the best cheese and the best people, I can only tell you: don’t feel ashamed at your Country as you are ashamed of your rulers. If the rulers cause you disillusion, from the President to the Ministers and Deputies, you must not strike a damp over you.The Portuguese never needed to be taught how to govern, simply in the 21st century life rules are radically different. Today one learns more in a day than in a hundred years, among the 7th and 8th centuries. The learning must be done everyday.Today others, not the Portuguese go ahead in knowledge, but in the 16th century XVI knowledge was strong-minded by the Portuguese. You must believe in yourself, in your strength and in your intelligence. Never say die, don't think you have to live a lifetime in the so-so. But don't want to live by your wits. It is not necessary.Today your Country is not only Portugal. Since 1985 it has grown up, thickened, enlarged, its limits has been fused. Your country is the whole Europe. It is a rich space where the most diligent and the most intelligent prosper. I can assure you that you can be one of them. The doors are open, it is enough to want, to jump from the slavery that is the poverty and the embarrassed moderation, and to enter in the club of the well-to-do. You have only to submit to an organized work, to a perfect administration and you’ll turn immediately from a simple one to a citizen with a free bank account. In your Country you are free too. But what is your profit? You put your eyes in the air, you wander past the street turnings, you beg some euros your parents or friends, you importunate the Government, you parasite. This is not life, it is creeping. If you don’t want, for the time being, to plough the land where you were born, go away from your home, your self-indulgence and turn over a new leaf. Or do you want to spend your time on mourning, telling you are unhappy, that the rulers are utter fools, that everything that happens is their fault? However, I insist further that it is yours. Of course you don't agree. The politicians have been failing. Sometimes they hit the nail on the head, but most of times they miss the mark. And, this way, little by little, the pride of all Portuguese, yours and mine has growing worse. We begin to feel that we are little worth and we begin to customize to the situation. But that cannot happen.Your ancestors’ energies whirl in the air and the whole Universe can suffer with your concerns. How must we leave this depressing condition? It is very simple. If the Rulers don't get to Govern this Country, show them, that, always respecting the laws, you knows how to create wealth and happiness. This Country is a harmonious accomplishment of the Nature. This means a lot. The beauty, the education, the knowledge are the weapons of the success. You only don't have everything because you don't use the intelligence and the strength of your work. Portugal and the whole European Union are waiting for you with open arms.In Portugal take advantage of everything that the law and the State allow you in order to, even without rulers or when they fail, you can build stalwartly your life, your descendants' future and your Country’s one.The school is the success basis. Without education, you must halt in the time and continue a slave. When a Government recognizes that it is impossible to improve the qualifications of 3,1 million adults, as regards to education and formation, up to 2010 to reach the European Union’s goals shows it that the impossible doesn't exist.Through Television and with our entrepreneurs' support, who also want better qualified people, you can bear out the State that your intelligence overcomes the weak quality of whom is always hesitating.Up to 2010 with the support of the televisions, retired and exceeding teachers the aim of the 3,1 million is perfectly within reach and one can even attain the 4,3 million Portuguese that can decrease to zero the illiteracy and to increase the knowledge at European levels. I speak for own experience. In the private education I had several students that did five years in a year of teaching and seven years in two. They were grown-ups. When adopting the modern techniques everything can be gotten better. I remember that a late manager of the Factory of Prado, Mr. Augusto Góis, a man who rose on his own wit every steps of life, learned English and French in three months, today he speaks these languages fluently. The owner of Santa Cita’s aviary D. Manuela, learned English in three months to import chickens from the United States. I could mention dozens of others. This before the April 25.SOBS 17Happily that the English language will be compulsory since the eight years old. For the Portuguese to learn any language is of a tremendous simplicity. The languages are learnt in the same way that one teaches to a two year-old child to speak. There is no grammar. The grammar only enters in the end, after setting up the structure and when it is well supported. In of Santa Maria dos Olivais’ School I was inspected by the Education Ministry as I had passed candidates who had been rejected in the other disciplines. Once appreciated the pupils, with tests to accuse me, they get at the conclusion that they had enough conditions to pass in the French language. I never cared nor I gave any importance to what some slow-witted didn't understand. I only do what gives me pleasure and it benefits the other ones. I am Portuguese. For me I see how it is difficult to be guided by people that uses bandages over their eyes. And I don't speak about the rulers, I refer to those who prevent the course of the progress because they learned in a way and then, for them, the world stopped. These ones’ behaviour is blameworthy in what concerns to the country to become unmanageable. Nowadays the learning must be daily. Who doesn't read newspapers, listen to radio, television, doesn't know how to work with a computer is always postponed in relation to those who use these knowledge and work means .I exhume these facts, which are into an autobiography, to be published over the month of Sundays, to show how we are and of what we are able. I entered the different backstage and I bare a tip of the iceberg, but if the Country needs I will pierce more deeply until we find the root of the evil and extirpate it. Before the April 25 the teachers didn't understand the scholars and the students lost interest in that frightful nuisance, at present we are not better, but everything can suddenly be altered. I plenty believe in the new technologies and in their miracles. It is enough to believe and to work.If the Government that is coming doesn’t get to revolutionize installed corporations mentalities is for the reason that it interests him so, it is because it insists on privileging the ignorance, to sponsoring it, to protect the friends in disrespect for the fitness and the work.A Portuguese youth, Carla of Almeida, that made all her education in England, where her parents work, when coming back, through interchange, for a Portuguese University, detected at once the collapse of our teaching. In the University the students still continue to be forbidden of thinking for their own. If they do it are punished. This finishes for creating them passive and negative attitudes. They are forbidden from analyzing and thinking on their own head. They have to go on with apprenticeship by heart what is written in the books or what the teacher explains. Now Carla working in a book on the oldest profession of the world and she does it with the freedom that the English University taught her to privilege. What Carla told me called to my mind what happened when I was ploughed in the (old) fifth year. I decided, the following year, to do the sixth and seventh in one year. The youth that, in two months, taught me Latin and Greek was a former seminarist. He entered the University and while my marks reached 13 in Latin, theirs only up to ten as he had had the courage to draw the teacher's attention for several flaws in the matter that she was teaching. Consequences, he abandoned the University.Nowadays, the magister dixit, continues to reign. The corporations are installed. Whether the Government doesn't have courage for beating them, somebody will have to do it.Let us believe in Ján Figel, Education, Formation, Culture and Multilingualism European Commissary, when he says:" The knowledge is the key of the future."Further on, in the interview he granted to João Pedro Oliveira, DN of December 27, 2004, underscores:The creation of the European space of teaching is the great aim"... We "must have comparable and compatible education systems ...”... " We need transparency and mobility".... " The Europass, will be thrown in February." The Europass is a European curriculum filled in on-line and recognized and readable in the whole European space.... We "want to arrive at 150 thousand students involved in Leonard da Vinci’ projects."... To "pass from a million to three million students involved in the Erasmus program up to 2011. "To finish, Ján Figel, makes it with gold key :The answer of the UE has to be the vocational formation and education along the life. No longer it arrives the secondary education or an university course. It is necessary permanent formation."In the site Ploteus - www.ploteus.net - you will find all UE ‘s education systems , as well all the possibilities to study in each of them.I pointed out these steps, separating them, so that they hammer well the head of any citizen, parents, students, teachers and Government. Our teaching has always been our Achilles' heel.Portugal has never been transparent in the field of the instruction. The academic institutions were always very weak, so weak that the students shake them. I saw by myself. I rejected. I shook the rigmarole. It is unbelievable as this Country, that had its first public school in 1269, in the Cistercian Alcobaça monastery and that in 1835 had the obligatory education declared and created the first Schools and Institutes, succeed in 1912 in its 80 percent of illiterates between six million inhabitants and, shame of the shames, in 2005 still having 15 percent of illiterates in ten million inhabitants.Either the First Republic, nor the New State and still less the Third Republic got to eliminate this scourge. The writer, Manuel Poppe, asserts that the serious mistake in the after April 25 was one have neglected the Education and the Investigation. The Portuguese was not taught to ratiocinate and to consult the books yet. The men of the revolution, even without shots, destroyed everything that laborious and painfully was arranged. To extinguish the Industrial Schools would not remind to the more fool. However it was done and there was nobody who tried to obstruct them.I talk ahead for you and for your children. You can know little, but sure you know that it is at the School that is the secret of your wealth and of your knowledge. Then you are aware that is elementary to have your children in the School from tender age. you can’t never let them down, and living and study only at their pleasure . The life has rules. They are learnt when one is youngster yet and who spares the rod spoils the child. It is not necessary to beat the children, it is enough to guide them from the birth on. Don't forget to let them play, keeping an eye on the study and that the school-works duties be made everyday in order to create them work habits. Focus on the Germans, look at the English, and Swedes, take tough action on the Finnish, look at the Jews, and Swiss’s, the Japanese or the Chinese. All of them laborious people and of knowledge. In the different stairways that your children have to climb, you have at your disposal several departments where you can find the answer to your doubts. The Country isn't driving, but never I was told that the Ministry of Education had closed its doors to who wants to study. Contact it. Or you need to ride pick-a-back? It is fundamental that you think you have duties too. Never be parasite or egoist. You don't need it. You own intelligence, two legs and two arms and will of leaving the smallness where you are confined.Your intelligence embraces everyone, for that, if to use in Portugal or in the rest of your Country which is the European Union, it still remains you a lot to know that you can be rich and happy and contribute for the wealth and happiness of the other ones.Your children, when they are born, no matter with a silver spoon under their mouth or in a modest house have at their disposal an Infantry. In order to enjoy the infantries it is enough to contact the Organisms put at your disposal by the State. Make an little effort, seek. You are clever enough to think and legs to walk.To those that excuse themselves with the sentence always lazily echoed: "there is no work." I answer questioning " is that right?" Look around. Do please you what you are seeing? As you have, of course, understood, there is a lot of work and we are only few. We are so few that others have to come from abroad to do what you don't want to do. There is work hear and all over the Europe. Those out of work are stupid, ignorant or silly people that are fond of living stretching their hands waiting survival subsidies. My reference goes to the unemployed people. As you have naturally understood my reference goes to the jobless people between the 20 and fifty years. As you have naturally comprehended, it is the indignity the loss of pride, the indifference that change the human being in a beggar.I have to be open-heart, if instead of working you prefer to live parasitizing the others, to be upgrading to poor fellow, your dignity is, no doubt, on the wave. Only intelligence and work do support the human being. And if no one gives you some work , you can create it. Generate your own business. The State is weak, but in this case, it can always help you.I am recalling that a few years ago, an engineer, having just got out from the University, didn't find work and he turn an clean-chimneys employee. Later he rises a company highly profitable in this branch, a very chatted case in several newspapers. If you are not going to grow with airs of a know-it-all and whether you join theory with practice, you'll see that it is much simpler to arrange work than you imagine. In the book, "Hello Youth", in groundwork yet, and I set out in Internet wwwcunhasimoesnet, in order to round there with it off, I try to open paths through examples I am involved. It is not finished yet as I have new ideas to develop. The little culture of more than a half of the Portuguese people draw its insight only for skin-deep things.SOBS 18After the April 25 there were some comedians that profited from the democratism doors to steadily disseminate their own cravings ; the indignity, the AIDS and the mental lees of these energumen, under the too much and anarchic protection of the word democracy. Some clowns reach the climax of the sexual obscenity, loathsome, worthless when operating in democratic and permissive televisions, inducing the less intellectualized classes to reproachable behaviours in irrational beasts. These jokers know that when their programs turn prohibited, their protectionism will be increased as they should argue on behalf of themselves with the expression freedom. Far away the idea of broadcasting this unduly called entertainment programs to show pornographic films, but often, with a great lot of lacking pornography than the programs of these clowns full of money at the cost of the shabby contamination of a naïve gays ' country. This money, spent by the televisions could be directed to such qualification programs that the Europe Union stipulates to put ourselves neck and neck with the richest countries in Europe.I am sure that the audiences would stay since the people knew that it was of their own interest.Portugal is only unmanageable because the politicians are not good managers. They are surrounded by assistants without quality. The result is clear.A Country, avid of knowledge, doesn't only move forward because their leaders are inept. They let to influence themselves by the national blindness, the demagogues, the destroyers, the envious, the imbecile and by those that, not knowing about anything, they speak about everything and they have at their disposal the means of communication. When the politicians understand that a Country that privileges the knowledge and all information technologies, is because he wants to learn; then the country will win direction.Eighty percent of the Portuguese possess cellular phones and close to fifty percent utilize the Internet; will it be that, with these values, the Portuguese are more unable than the Germans, the Swedes, Norwegians or Japanese? What are the politicians waiting for?Dear bookworm, I kept throughout almost 30 years facts that I considered as degeneration of the Portuguese character and today I began to lift the cover...A lot of times we are very little, the People says too thorough to act in certain circumstances. That cannot happen any more. The responsible for the Country, the politicians have to put above their humours or of their conveniences the interest of Portugal. What in this moment, final of 2004, beginning of 2005 is happening, force us to run down. If we happened not taking place in the European Union, Portugal would be guided by the International Monetary Fund, what would drive us to the club of the fools, slow-witted, to the rubbish of the world. Is that the end? Have we lost our capacities altogether? Has the cells regeneration of ceased its renewing? Are we at the peoples’ level, that make wars for mere nothings, and of others that begin some hostilities without knowing how they will be going to finish them and they assume themselves as democratic and decent people? Some years ago I published a novella “There are unforgettable women." Seek in the Internet in www.cunhasimoes.net; with the subtitle, Diana. In that book I say that the men should be considered adults only since they are thirty five years old. I think I’m wrong. I must amplify this time much more. Of course I include myself in the lot. Before being incinerated into the fire of the global stupidity, I ask the politicians, the President, the Prime Minister, the Ministers, the Secretaries of State, the Deputies and all the Autarchies’ Presidents that think about Portugal, about their own children's future and of all the Portuguese, otherwise we will enter, unfortunately, the way of the whole recklessness.Even without any visible revolution, the People will take the politicians as laughable jumping Jacks, it will never again respect them and each one will do what he feels like. We are short way off for that to happen. There won't be prisons to hold so much unhappy. It is the peaceful revolution of which all us will going to suffer the consequences.I couldn’t stand any longer this pain, which is to see Portugal being destroyed, our Country, by childish people that insists on going for a public office as if they went to their latrine. It is for love and for despair that I ask you: let us save Portugal. Let us put aside the amateurism, the susceptibilities, the arrogance, the importance, let us put aside the puerile obstinacies. Let us save Portugal. The dismissal for the President and the kick out at the deputies was the Portuguese tsunami. To drop lower is very difficult. Nothing is remaining except the fingers. It is with them, and with the intelligence, that we have to lift Portugal. The Portuguese has to let govern who governs. He has to accept sacrifices for Portugal navigate again. He has to believe in himself and to accept the existing work, later he will change. The Government cannot benefit the clienteles only because of the vote, of the noise and of the pasting of posters. The people have to show value and work, otherwise, the Government is going to be chosen, will submit to serious consequences. In the previous pages I gave elucidating examples. Who doesn't want to understand, don't understand, but later doesn’t let complain or throw the blame on the people. The Portuguese People has as much of sweet as of rough . Don't strain the rope too much.Above personal interests, obstinacies, hardly stood offences, of the doggedness’s and of the prides is Portugal. The Portuguese will accept any winner, from the PCP, BE, the PS, PSD-PPD, to the CD-PP.The Portuguese want to be well governed. For Portugal all will give their lifes. ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
